In this article, we take a closer look at 10 batsmen who were the fastest to get to 8000 runs in Tests, including the number of innings and matches it took them to achieve the milestone. Sangakkara leads the pack having achieved the mark in his 152nd innings in his 91st Test match.

1. KC Sangakkara (Sri Lanka)

Sangakkara made his Test debut on 20 July 2000 and reached his 8000th run in August 2010 in his 152nd innings in his 91st Test. It was the 3rd match of a series on India’s tour of Sri Lanka played in Colombo. In that match, Sri Lanka batted first and scored 425 to which Sangakkara contributed 75. India replied with 436 before dismissing Sri Lanka for 267 in their second innings. Set a target of 258, India won the match by 5 wickets. Sangakkara reached 8000 Test runs during his second innings knock of 28.

SR Tendulkar (India)p>Tendulkar debuted on 15 November 1989 and got to 8000 Test runs in his 154th innings in his 96th Test in May 2002 in Kingston which was the 5th match of a series on India’s tour of West Indies. West Indies batted first in that match and scored 422 before dismissing India for 212. The hosts were bowled out for 197 in their second knock. Set 408 to win, India were all out for 252, rendering West Indies the winners by 155 runs. Sachin contributed 86 to the chase, reaching the milestone of 8000 Test runs in the process.

3. G S Sobers (West Indies)

Sobers began playing Test cricket on 30 March 1954 and got past 8000 Test runs in his 157th innings in his 91st match played in February 1974 in Kingston. It was the 2nd Test of a series on England’s tour of the West Indies. England batted first and scored 353. In reply, West Indies declared their innings at 583/9. England were 432/9 in their second innings when stumps were drawn. Sobers contributed 57 to the West Indian score.

4. R Dravid (India)

trong>Dravid began his Test career on 10 December 2005 and reached 8000 runs during his 158th innings in his 94th Test in Delhi, the 2nd match of a series on Sri Lanka’s tour of India. India, who batted first, scored 290 before dismissing the visitors for 230. In their second knock, India made 375/6 declared in which Dravid’s contribution was 53. Chasing 436 to win, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 247, making India the winners by 188 runs.

In that game, Australia batted first and scored 333 before bowling out the visitors for 282, in which Sehwag made 67. India bowled out Australia for 240 in their second knock. Chasing 292 to win, India collapsed to be all out for 169, allowing Australia to win the match by 122 runs.

New Zealand made 217 before Pakistan managed a score of 357 in their second knock in which Javed Miandad made 55. Set to score 243 to win, the visitors were bowled out for 177, leaving Pakistan the winners by 65 runs.

Lara, who made his Test debut on 6 December 1990, achieved 8000 Test runs in May 2003 in his 164 innings in his 94th Test in St John’s which was the 3rd match of a series on Australia’s tour of the West Indies. In that game, Australia batted first and made 240 before dismissing West Indies for an identical score. In their second knock, Australia made 417. West Indies managed to chase down the record target of 418 with 3 wickets to spare. Lara, who had scored 68 in the first innings, reached his 8000th Test run during his second-innings knock of 60.

Set to make 287 to win, Australia reached the target with 8 wickets to spare, thanks largely to Ponting’s innings of 143 not out, following up on his first innings knock of 120 during which he got to his 8000th run.

Pakistan replied with 765/6 declared but the match ended in a draw, with the visitors finishing on 144/5 when stumps were drawn.
