When it comes to stumpings, you need strong reflexes and a sharp mind. It also depends on the presence of quality spinners in the team who are capable enough to create such changes. Let’s talk about the finest wicket-keepers in the history of ODIs in terms of stumpings affected.

The list contains many players from the subcontinent due to the fact that the pitches in the subcontinent are conducive to spin bowling and the subcontinent countries have produced many great spin-bowling legends like Muralitharan and Kumble. The list has 2 wicket-keepers each from India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Australia and Bangladesh.

Let’s begin with the Indian legend, Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Dhoni was involved in 25 stumpings against Sri Lanka – the most for him – followed by 18 against Australia and 16 against England. He has 51 stumpings at home. Away from home, he has affected the most stumpings in England, 13 stumpings, followed by 11 stumpings in Sri Lanka. Dhoni made the most stumpings (18) in 2007 followed by 13 each in 2013 and 2017.

Away from home, in the UAE, he has made the most – 17 stumpings – followed by 10 in India. About 80% of his stumpings have come in Asia where the pitches offer assistance to spin bowling. In 1999, Kaluwitharana affected 18 stumpings, the most in a year for him, followed by 12 in 1996, the year when Sri Lanka won their first ODI world cup.

Most of his stumpings have come against India and Sri Lanka with 13 stumpings each against each of these oppositions followed by 12 stumpings against the West Indies and 10 each against England and New Zealand. Only 26% of his stumpings have been affected when playing home, with the rest made in away or neutral conditions. In away conditions, he has the most stumpings in the UAE followed by 9 and 8 stumpings in England and Australia respectively. In the years 1996 and 1999, Moin Khan made 13 stumpings each, the most in a calendar year.
