The ICC Details Process by Which Teams Can Qualify for T20 World Cup 2022

The ICC has detailed the process by which teams can qualify for the 2022 World T20 in Australia.

T20 World Cup 2020 Postponed to 2022

The coronavirus pandemic has caused the ICC to postpone the World T20 that was to be hosted by Australia in 2020 to 2022. Sixteen teams that have already qualified to play in the 2020 event will participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 to be hosted by India. Those teams are Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, Namibia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Oman, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Scotland, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies.

Four-Step Qualification Processp>A four-step qualification process to decide 15 spots (other than hosts Australia) at the T20 World Cup 2022 will begin in April 2021. (As many as 11 regional qualifiers were to be held in five regions in 2020, postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic.) Across 13 months, 86 teams will play 225 matches in the qualifying phase to help decide which teams will fill the 15 spots. Regional Qualifiers to Fill Eight Global Qualifier Spotsp>Sixty-seven associate members will take part in regional qualifiers. One top tier regional qualifier each will be held in Europe, EAP (East Asia and Pacific), Americas and Africa; additionally, Asia will have two. The regional qualifiers will help decide the 16 teams that will compete in two eight-team global qualifiers. The Africa and EAP qualifiers will provide one team each to help fill the 16 spots in the global qualifiers. The qualifiers in Americas, Europe and Asia will help provide two teams each. How the Remaining Eight Spots Will Be Filledp>The remaining eight teams, according to press release issued by the ICC, will consist of the four bottom teams of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in addition to Zimbabwe, the UAE, Singapore and Nepal whose MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings have helped these teams gain direct entry to the global qualifiers. The global qualifiers will help select four teams to join the 11 automatic qualifiers from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 and hosts Australia to add up to 16 teams that will play in the Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

Many Firsts for ICC

trong>In a first for international cricket, Serbia, Romania and Hungary will take part in the qualifiers for the Men’s T20 World Cup. Also, an ICC event will be held in Finland for the first time. Thanks to the relative depth of cricketing talent in their regions, Africa and Europe will have a final regional qualifier with subregional qualifiers feeding into it. Japan will play host to a Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier for the first time ever, two weeks after they help organise an U19 World Cup Qualifier. According to the head of ICC events, Chris Tetley, the schedule reflects the heightened competitiveness among Associate Members.
