Highest Averages in T20 Internationals

 

The shortest format of the game has separate demands from the players. It’s a fast-paced game and the strike rate matters as much as the consistency in run-scoring. Very few have been able to achieve both. This is a list of players with the highest averages in T20 internationals. The qualification criterion is a minimum of 50 T20I innings.

The list features Kohli at the top and along with him, there are two more Indians on this list, MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. The list also features 3 players from New Zealand. 2 Australian players and 1 each from South Africa and West Indies have made it to this list as well. This list is a combination of hard hitters and classy players. Let’s begin with Virat Kohli, the only person to have an average of more than 50 in T20Is.

Indian captain and an all-format player Virat Kohli tops the list of batsmen with the highest averages in T20I cricket. In 76 T20I innings (82 matches), Virat Kohli has scored 2794 runs at an average of 50.8 with 24 half-centuries and 21 not outs. The only player with an average of more than 50. In fact, no other player on this list has an average of more than 40 either.

Kohli has managed to achieve an average of above 50 with a decent strike rate of 138.24. Kohli averages more than 50 against Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Australia, Bangladesh, West Indies and Afghanistan. He averages around 80 against Sri Lanka (84.75) and Pakistan (84.66). He has an unbelievable average of 94.90 in Bangladesh and has close to 80 in Australia.

Duminy has the highest average against India – 59.00 in 10 matches (295 runs). Apart from India, he has an average of more than 50 against Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand. His worst average is against West Indies, 6.60 in 6 matches. With 240 runs in 5 matches, Duminy has the best average of 68.00 in Australia. He has the best average in Asian countries, 57.83.

Keeping the same criterion, Finch averages the worst against Sri Lanka, 27.12 in 8 matches (64 runs). Finch has the best average in Zimbabwe, 76.50 in 5 matches (306 runs). In England, he has the second-best average of 61.66 in 6 matches (370 runs).

Dhoni was out only once in 5 matches against Bangladesh which led to his average of 89. His next best is an average of 49.33 in 14 matches against England (296 runs). He scored maximum runs against Australia, 313 runs, in 17 matches at an average of 39.12. In Bangladesh, Dhoni has the best average of 92.00 in 11 T20Is with 7 not outs.

He played the most T20Is against England and in 13 games against them, he scored 314 runs at an average of 28.54. He has an average of 43.72 at home, the best in any country with a minimum of 5 matches.

In 6 matches against Sri Lanka, Maxwell averages a whopping 140.50 with an unbeaten century of 145 not out. He has played the most T20I innings against India and has scored 353 runs in 11 such innings at an average of 35.30. All of his 3 international T20 centuries have been unbeaten knocks, against Sri Lanka (145*), India (113*) and England (103*).

In 28 innings played home, Williamson scored 920 runs at an average of 41.81. In 2016, he played 10 T20Is and scored 383 runs at an average of 47.87.

His couple of T20 international centuries have come against South Africa and Australia. His strike rate has been pretty consistent against all oppositions with the highest of 145.48 against England.
