Every Test batter with a proper career has had at least one good year. Whether it was a sudden burst of form, a home-heavy Test season, or just a few favored opponents within that timeframe, such years stand out as not just excellent memories for the player and their fans to look back upon fondly, but also a sharp incline in statistical graphs and a point of interest for professional pundits and self-taught experts.

The year 2016 was much like any other in terms of cricket, with ten players emerging as the highest run grossers. For some of these players, the collection was actually a step down from their best or even their average, but they nevertheless made this list. Here are the top 10 highest Test run-getters of 2016.

the greatest batters England has ever produced, Root is well on the way to breaking many a record, and 2016 was one of his best years. He picked up a massive 1,477 runs in 32 innings, averaging 49.23. There were 3 centuries and 10 half centuries among those runs, and a highest score of 254 was the cherry on top. Since that year, Root has kept up his incredible Test form, with his 1,710 runs in 2021 making it his best year yet at the time of writing.

2. Jonny Bairstow (England)

fellow Englishman may have disappeared from such lists in recent years, and although Bairstow is still a potent player in any format of the game, he had a far better year in 2016. Scoring just 7 less than Root, Bairstow was instrumental to England during what was a very Test-heavy period for the team. He averaged a whopping 58.80 over 29 innings, had 3 centuries, 8 fifties, and 4 not outs to his name, and got a high-score of 167*.

Cook remains the all-time highest run-getter for the Brits, and 2016 was just another solid year in his career.

Averaging 42.33 over 33 innings, he made two centuries and 7 fifties between January and December.

It can be a little difficult for people who started watching cricket any time in the last two years to understand just why Virat Kohli is regarded so highly, but one need not go much further than a little stats-hunting to understand why. It was one of Kohli’s best years, and he piled up 1,215 runs in 18 innings at a dizzying average of 75.93, with 4 centuries, 2 fifties, and 2 unbeaten knocks. His highest score for the year was a powerful 235.

vely unlikely entry, Azhar Ali had a fantastic 2016. In 22 innings, he scored a brilliant 1,198 runs at an average of 63.05, getting 3 hundreds and 4 half-centuries in the process. Ali also had a high-score of 302*, becoming only the fourth Pakistani cricketer to get a triple century. He was also not out one other time apart from that mammoth knock, which helped his average.

Undoubtedly one of the finest Test batters of the modern era, Smith is basically Australia’s answer to England’s Root and India’s Kohli. The brilliant yet idiosyncratic cricketer had a pretty good 2016 with 1,079 runs to his name. Averaging a formidable 71.93 in 18 innings, Smith also got 4 tons and 5 half-tons in what was a highly successful year for him. However, He would soon be embroiled in a scandal that would see him and teammate David Warner out of action for a while.

Ali scored 1,078 runs across 29 innings at an average of 46.86, which is far higher than overall Test average of 28.29. He also made 4 centuries and 5 fifties, and was not out a whopping 6 times. Ali’s highest score for the year was a brilliant 155*.

He racked up 904 runs across 21 innings averaging 45.20, got 2 centuries and 3 half-centuries, and had a high-score of 258 as the icing on the cake. He was also the player to hit the most sixes on this list with 21 maximums.

He scored 836 runs over 16 innings, with 3 hundreds and 4 fifties. With an average of 55.73, he was one of the most consistent figures for India that year. Since then, his career has seen both ups and downs, and is on a low at the time of writing.

With 753 runs in 16 innings, Khawaja averaged 47.06, which is greater than his overall Test average. His exploits included two 100s and four 50s, and his highest score for the year was 145.
