Afsar Zazai is an Afghan wicket-keeper-batsman who plays for the MIS Ainak region and the MIS Ainak Knights at the domestic level. He is the first Test cap for Afghanistan. At the age of 16, Zazai was included in Afghanistan’s Under-19 squad for ICC Under-19 World Cup 2010 after making 9 dismissals in qualifiers. He scored 13 runs and dismissed 4 behind the stumps. He was selected again for ICC Under-19 World Cup 2012. Zazai scored 193 runs at an average of 38.60 in 6 games. He took 8 catches and did one stumping behind the wickets.

Zazai made his first-class debut against the Netherlands in the ICC Intercontinental Cup in April 2012. He scored 84 runs in his second innings and remained unbeaten to help Afghanistan win by 3 wickets. In 27 first-class games, Zazai has scored 1111 runs in 39 innings at an average of 32.67. He has dismissed 71 players behind the wicket. He scored his first century against Ireland in the ICC Intercontinental Cup in March 2017.

Afsar Zazai made his T20I debut against Kenya on 11 October 2013. In his only T20I, he scored 9 runs at a strike rate of 42.85 and stumped Rakep Patel on 8. Zazai was selected for the four-match ODI series against the UAE in 2014-15. He played his first ODI on 28 November 2014. Zazai scored 60 in 109 balls in a losing cause. Batting at number 3, he continued his form in the second ODI by scoring another half-century. Afghanistan lost the second ODI too because of the brilliant knock of the UAE captain Khurram Khan. Afsar Zazai was the second-leading scorer for Afghanistan after Nawroz Mangal. Zazai scored 139 runs in 4 games at an average of 34.75. Zazai was an integral part of Afghanistan’s 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup campaign. He had a rather poor campaign and scored 36 runs in 6 games at an average of 6.00. He lost his place in the team to Mohammad Shahzad. In 17 ODIs, Zazai has scored 264 runs at an average of 17.60. He has taken 17 catches and 2 stumpings so far.

Zazai was drafted to Amo Sharks in the 5th season of the Shpageeza Premier League (SPL) in 2017-18. He scored 69 runs in 5 games with a strike rate of 78.41. In the SPL 2019, Zazai scored 231 runs in 8 games at an average of 77 and a strike rate of 126.22. He also had 5 dismissals behind the wicket. Currently, he plays for Mis Ainak Knights.

Zazai made his Test debut in Afghanistan’s inaugural Test match on 14 June 2018. He is Afghanistan’s Test cap number 1. He scored 7 runs and took 2 catches against India in his first Test match. He played the only Test of Afghanistan’s tour of Bangladesh. He scored 41 runs in the first innings and remained not out on 48 in second. Afghanistan won the historic Test by 224 runs. In the total of 3 Tests, Zazai has scored 135 runs at an average of 27 and has taken 5 catches
