Twenty-six-year-old opening batsman Aiden Markram has shown tremendous promise since he burst onto the international cricket scene in 2017. With the ability to play long innings, he is a perfect player to fill South Africa’s need for an opening batsman who can satisfy the batting demand of a squad that has recently gone short of outstanding batsmen such as De Villiers and Kallis.

Test Career

Aiden Markram played his first Test match against Bangladesh at Potchefstroom in September 2017. He fell just three runs short of a ton in his first Test innings in a match that South Africa won convincingly. He got his first Test hundred in the next match of the series at Bloemfontein in October 2017 when his 143 helped his side achieve another dominant victory. In his next match at Port Elizabeth in December 2017, he demolished the Zimbabwe bowlers scoring a match-winning 125. Another innings of 94 against India at Centurion in January 2018 helped South Africa to yet another win. Arguably, his best Test innings to date came at Johannesburg against Australia in March 2018 when Markram’s 152 off 216 balls helped South Africa to mount an imposing score of 488. Australia replied with 221 and South Africa strengthened their hold on the game with 344/6 declared in their second innings. Australia were bowled out for 119 in their second innings to grant South Africa a victory by 419 runs, one of their greatest margins. However, since that innings, Markram has not had any three-figure knocks, though he has registered some useful figures such as 78 and 90 against Pakistan in January 2019 and 60 against Sri Lanka in February 2019, all those helping South Africa to win the matches. Though Aiden did not score many runs in his last match at Centurion in December 2019 against England, South Africa did win that one too. In 20 Test matches, Aiden Markram has scored 1424 runs at an average of 38.48 with the best batting performance of 154.

ODI Career

Aiden Markram made a match-winning 66 in his first ODI in East London against Bangladesh in October 2017. Interestingly, he turned his part-time bowling skills into good results by taking 2/18 in the game, including the scalps of Shakib al Hasan and Sabbir Rahman. South Africa won the game by a huge margin of 200 runs. In the next series against the visiting Indians held in February 2018, he had some great starts of 32, 22, 32 and 24, that he, unfortunately, failed to convert into big innings. In fact, he got starts in most of the matches he played at the time: 20 against Sri Lanka in August 2018; 27, 35, 42 against Zimbabwe in October 2018; 36, 19, 32 against Australia in November 2018. In March 2019, he made scores of 20 and 67 not out against the visiting Sri Lankans. The latter innings at Cape Town was arguably Aiden Markram’s most impressive ODI performance, enabling South Africa to win the game, though using the DL method. In a largely forgettable World Cup 2019, Markram scored 140 runs in eight matches at an average of 23.33 with the highest score of 45. In 26 ODI matches, Markram has scored 643 runs at an average of 27.95 with the highest score of 67 not out. He has also taken three wickets at 44.00 with his best bowling figures of 2/18.

T20I Career

Aiden Markram played his first T20I match at Centurion in March 2019 against Sri Lanka. It was not the ideal start he would have wanted as he got out after scoring just three runs. However, South Africa, who scored 180/3 batting first, won the match after they had kept Sri Lanka down to 164/9 in their allotted overs. In the second match of the series at Johannesburg, Markram did not perform much better, getting 15 runs before being dismissed. However, South Africa won this one too, piling up 198/2 in their 20 overs and bowling Sri Lanka out for 137. Markram was never again considered for selection in the South Africa T20I squad. In two T20I matches played, Markram has scored 18 runs at an average of 9.00 with the best batting performance of 15.
