Ajaz Patel was born on 21 October 1988 in Mumbai and moved to Auckland, New Zealand in 1996. He bowls slow left-arm orthodox for New Zealand and Central District in domestic cricket. Groomed as a left-arm fast bowler, Patel switched to the spin department after a suggestion from former New-Zealand off-spinner Dipak Patel. After getting snubbed from the Auckland team, he switched to Taradale Club in Napier. Averaging around 3 wickets per game, Ajaz Patel was handed his domestic T20 debut by Central District in Super Smash 2012 against Wellington. In a span of 3 weeks, he made his first-class debut for Central District in Plunket Shield tournament.

Patel took 15 wickets in his first season at an average of 32.33 and an economy of 2.74 to help Central District win their 6th first-class title. Patel was the leading wicket-taker for three consecutive seasons picking up 43, 44 and 48 wickets in the 2015-16, 16-17 and 17-18 Plunket Shield campaigns respectively. In 64 first-class games, Ajaz Patel has picked up 242 wickets at an average of 32.11 and an economy of 3.15. He has 18 five-fors and 3 ten-wicket hauls. Ajaz was named Men’s Domestic Player of the Season in 2018.

Patel’s control over the red ball caught the attention of national selectors and he was picked for the New Zealand tour of the UAE against Pakistan. He made his T20I debut on 31 October 2018 against Pakistan. He opened the bowling attack for New Zealand and picked his only wicket so far, giving 27 runs in 4 overs. In 2 T20Is, Patel has taken 1 wicket at an average of 45.00 and an economy of 7.50

Ajaz Patel played his maiden Test against Pakistan on 16 November 2018. He picked two wickets in his first innings followed by five-for 59 with an economy of 2.49 in second. Patel became the 9th New Zealand international to pick up five wickets on debut. New Zealand won the Test by 4 runs and Patel got his first Man of the Match award. Patel finished the series as New Zealand’s leading wicket-taker with 13 wickets in 3 games at an average of 29.61 and an economy of 2.83. 

Ajaz Patel has starred in 8 Test matches, taking 22 wickets at an average of 33.31 and an economy of 2.70. 

Patel has a father, a mother and two younger sisters in his family. He is married to Nilofer Patel since December 2014.
