Asitha Fernando was born on 31 July 1997 at a place called Katuneriya in Sri Lanka. He first came into the limelight during the Under-19 World Cup in 2016. In just six games in that tournament, Fernando picked 11 wickets and had an average of 16.45. Though Sri Lanka couldn’t progress past the semis, his best moment came against India. He picked up a four-wicket haul against the eventual finalists.

Biography

Though he was called up for the series against Australia in 2016, he did not play a single game. Fernando made his debut for Sri Lanka in a match against Zimbabwe in 2017. That game, however, was thwarted by rain and Sri Lanka ended up losing the contest by D/L method.

Asitha Fernando represented Chillaw Marians Cricket Club in the SLC Twenty20 Tournament, making his T20 debut in 2016. He was also picked up by Galle Gladiators in October last year for the inaugural season of the Lanka Premier League. Having played 11 first-class games, Asitha Fernando has picked up 19 scalps, including a fifer. He has picked up 9 wickets in 6 List A games.

Test

Andre McCarthy made his Test debut against South Africa earlier this year, on 3 January 2021. It came in a losing cause as South Africa defeated Sri Lanka and Asitha Fernando could only pick up two wickets in the match.

He has represented Sri Lanka in the three Tests so far, which included the Test series against England at home. Having played three Tests, he has picked up four wickets and has an average of 39. His best bowling figures so far is the spell of 2 for 24 that came against England.

ODI

Asitha Fernando made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in 2017. He went wicketless in that game as he conceded 22 runs in his 2 overs. Asitha Fernando was also unfortunate to be on the losing side as Sri Lanka ended up losing the game by the Duckworth-Lewis method, despite showing plenty of promise. He hasn’t played an ODI game since then.

T20I

Asitha Fernando is yet to make his T20I debut for Sri Lanka. For the series against the West Indies in March 2020, Fernando was included in the Sri Lankan squad though he did not play a single match.

Records and Facts

Asitha Fernando made his T20 debut on 24 February 2018 while representing Chillaw Marians Cricket Club in the SLC Twenty20 Tournament 2017-18. Asitha Fernando finished as the leading wicket-taker for Dambulla in the 2018 Super Provincial One-Day Tournament. He took six scalps in just three games.

Asitha Fernando was also a part of the Sri Lankan squad in both the 2018 as well as 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup, the latter of which was held in Bangladesh. He was also named in the Sri Lankan squad for the 2019 South Asian Games where Sri Lanka finished as finalists. Bangladesh defeated them by seven wickets in the final of that competition.
