Domestic Career

Dhananjaya played for Colombo in the Super Four Provincial domestic matches during the 2017 – 2018 season. The next year, he appeared for Galle. He starred in the domestic one-day tournament that took place in 2019 and received the Man of the Tournament award.

International Career Progress

Dhananjaya played his first T20I versus Pakistan in July 2015 and cracked 31 but could not prevent Sri Lanka from losing. His ODI debut was versus Ireland in June 2016 and his maiden Test was played against the Aussies the next month. He became the first Sri Lankan player to hit a six as his first runs scored in a Test. His first Test victim was Peter Nevill.

Dhananjaya’s first Test hundred came in the third Test of that series. He rescued Sri Lanka from 5/26 by partnering in a century stand with Dinesh Chandimal to give his team a helping hand. Dhananjaya finished the series top scorer, cracking 325 runs at 65.00 average with 1 hundred and 1 half-century. His superb performance helped Sri Lanka whitewash the Aussies for the first time.

After the retirement of Tillakaratne Dilshan, Dhananjaya was promoted to opener in ODIs. In his first match, he clobbered 76 which became the highest score for a Lankan player opening in an ODI for the first time. However, his bad form further on put him back to the middle order. Dhananjaya shone in the next Test series played versus Zimbabwe, knocking a fifty and a hundred in 2 Tests.

However, his poor performances after this series led to him being dropped from the national team. He was called back for a tour to India and cracked 119 not out in the third Test, which was the highest score in the fourth innings ever achieved by a touring batter in India. Nevertheless, India won the 3-match Test series 1-0.

After that, he scored a Test hundred (173) playing versus Bangladesh at Chittagong. In this innings, he completed 1,000 runs in Tests in just 23 innings, joining Michael Vandort and Roy Dias to be the fastest Sri Lankan batters to reach the landmark. Dhananjya’s last Test before the COVID-19 outbreak and, as a consequence, halt in international cricket was played against Zimbabwe at Harare in January 2020.
