Background

Hamish Bennett’s cricket career began when he was selected to represent New Zealand in the U-19 Cricket World Cup that took place in Sri Lanka in 2006. Hamish got a call-up to play ODI cricket after he had established himself in first-class cricket. As of date, he has taken 256 wickets at 28.34 in 76 first-class matches with his best bowling figures of 7/50. Bennett has also taken 156 wickets at 25.58 in 106 List A matches with the best bowling figures of 6/45. He began his first-class career playing for Canterbury but since the 2018-2019 season has played for Wellington who offered him a contract. Hamish Bennett got a Test debut against India in November 2010 but after he went wicketless in the game, he has not been selected to play any more Test matches.

ODI Career

Hamish Bennett has taken 33 wickets in 19 ODIs at an average of 24.84 with his best bowling figures of 4/16. He took 3/44 in his first game against Bangladesh in Dhaka on 14 October 2010. However, that performance came in a lost cause. On 22 January 2011, Bennett took 3/26 against Pakistan in Wellington in the 1st game of a series to help bowl out the tourists for 124, paving the way for New Zealand to win by 9 wickets. His wickets included those of Younis Khan, Umar Akmal and Sohail Tanvir. In the same series, in Auckland in February 2011, New Zealand batted first and scored 311/7. Replying, Pakistan were bowled out for 254 thanks largely to Hamish Bennett’s bowling returns of 4/46, accounting for the scalps of Md Hafeez, Younis Khan, Shahid Afridi and Umar Gul. Playing in Chennai, in an ICC World Cup group match on 20 February 2011, Hamish Bennett registered his best ODI bowling figures of 4/16 to help bowl out Kenya for 69. Bennett was named Player of the Match in a game that New Zealand won by 10 wickets. In the 3rd match of the Ireland Tri-Series in Dublin on 17 May 2017, Bangladesh scored 257/9 against New Zealand. Hamish Bennett returned figures of 3/31, accounting for the scalps of Mahmudullah, Mosaddek Hossain and Mehdi Hasan Miraj. New Zealand chased down the target with 4 wickets and 15 balls to spare. In Auckland on 8 February 2020, in the 2nd ODI of a series on India’s tour of New Zealand, New Zealand batted first and scored 273/8. In reply, India were bowled out for 251 thanks in part to Bennett’s bowling figures of 2/58, accounting for the dismissals of MA Agarwal and SS Iyer. In the last ODI of the series in Mount Maunganui on 11 February 2020, Hamish Bennett took 4/64 to help restrict India to a score of 296/7 on a batting track, paving the way for New Zealand to win by 5 wickets. Bennett’s victims included V Kohli, KL Rahul, MK Pandey and SN Thakur.
