ODI Career

Zazai played his first ODI against Ireland at Belfast in August 2018. Though he scored only 14, Afghanistan won the match by 29 runs. He got his first ODI half-century when he scored 67 – his highest ODI score so far – against Ireland at Dehradun in March 2019. Afghanistan scored 250/7 on the back of Zazai’s innings but the match got rained out. He had a few more impressive ODI innings, including 34 against Ireland at Dehradun in March 2019 and 30 against Sri Lanka at Cardiff in June 2019, though both those innings came in matches lost by Afghanistan. Zazai last appeared in an ODI game against the West Indies at Lucknow in November 2019. Zazai made a brilliant 50 to help his side achieve a respectable score of 249/7 but the West Indies managed to chase it down with five wickets in hand. In 16 ODIs, Zazai has scored 361 runs at an average of 22.56, with the best batting performance of 67.

T20I Career

Zazai played his first T20I match against the UAE in Dubai in December 2016. He made 18 in a match that Afghanistan won by five wickets, chasing down a challenging target of 180. He got his first T20I half-century against Ireland at Bready in August 2018, when he made 74 off 33 balls in a match that Afghanistan won by 24 runs. He followed up that innings with 82 off 54 in another match-winning performance. However, his most spectacular performance in any format of cricket came at Dehradun against Ireland in February 2019, when he made 162 not out off 62 balls, with 11 fours and 16 sixes. Against a formidable Afghanistan total of 278/3, Ireland could manage only 194/6, in a match that saw Zazai named Man of the Match for the highest T20I score by an Afghan batsman. He had a few more good starts in 2019, including 31 each against Ireland and Zimbabwe, and 47 against Bangladesh. He made his last appearance in a T20I against the West Indies at Lucknow in November 2019. In 15 T20Is, Zazai has scored 570 runs at an average of 22.56, with the best batting performance of 162 not out.
