Test Career

Roach played his first Test match against Bangladesh in 2009. He was chosen at the time the main players of the team were on strike. However, the West Indies selectors stuck with Roach even after the regular players had returned to the squad. Relatively short, of 173 cm height, Roach is nevertheless pacey, and can bowl at speeds approaching 150 kmph. Figures of 3/46 and 3/67 in two innings of a Test stood testimony to Roach’s calibre. He got his first fifer in the next match against Bangladesh when he took 6/48 with the hosts losing the match narrowly. Five months later, Roach was playing in a Test series in Australia. Though he took only seven wickets in three matches, his bowling was highly praised and he was selected to play against the visiting South Africans in June 2010.

2011 wasn’t a very good year for Roach who played four matches and took seven wickets. It was during Australia’s tour of the West Indies that the bowler found his stride, with 19 wickets in three matches, including a 10-wicket haul in the second Test. Since then, Roach was regularly among the wickets, with figures of 5/60 against the visiting New Zealanders in 2012 and 5/72 when the West Indians toured England later that year. He also had impressive figures of 5/8 against Bangladesh on their tour of the West Indies. In the second match of the current series against England, Roach took 2/37 to get his first wickets in about a year.

In 56 Test matches, Roach has taken 197 wickets at an average of 27.53 with the best bowling figures of 6/48 and nine fifers. He has also scored 901 runs at 12.17 with the highest score of 41.

ODI Career

Roach played his first ODI in August 2008 against Bermuda, with match-winning figures of 2/29. He got his first fifer in ODIs (5/44) on the tour of Bangladesh. During the World Cup held in the Indian subcontinent, roach became the best wicket-taker for the West Indies in the tournament, with 13 wickets in six matches, including a hattrick against the Netherlands. In the 2019 World Cup, Roach got just six wickets from four matches but that included an impressive match-winning 3/36 against Afghanistan. In 92 ODIs, Roach has taken 124 wickets at an average of 30.34 with the best bowling figures of 6/27 and three fifers. He has also scored 308 runs at 13.39 with the highest score of 34.

T20I Career

Roach had an impressive start to his T20I career against Australia at Bridgetown in June 2008, when his match-winning effort of 2/29 helped restrict Australia to 97/3 off 11 overs. The West Indies batsmen chased down the target in 9.1 overs. He had another match-winning performance against India at Bridgetown in May 2010 when his 2/38 helped restrict India to 155/9 while chasing a target of 170. However, clearly, the West Indies selectors did not consider Roach an ideal T20I bowler as they did not give him another chance to show himself after December 2012 when he played his last game against Bangladesh.
