Lungisani Ngidi is a South African pace bowler who was born on 29 March 1996. In 2018, the cricket board of South Africa named him one of the best cricketers of the year. Then, in July 2020, he was announced T20I and ODI cricketer of the year by the board.

Early Life

Ngidi spent his early days in Kloof, Durban, and attended Highbury Preparatory School on a scholarship. His father was a maintenance specialist and his mother a domestic worker. Ngidi also received a scholarship to study at Hilton College. There, he excelled in rugby but later changed his focus to cricket. At Hilton, he received coaching from ex-Zimbabwe cricketer Neil Johnson. After studying at Hilton, Ngidi entered the University of Pretoria to study industrial sociology.

Domestic Career

In 2015, Ngidi was selected in the Northerns team for the Africa T20 Cup. He received the Player of the Year award for his performance that season. In August 2017, Benoni Zalmi selected him for the maiden T20 Global League. However, this competition was canceled later.

In October 2018, Tshwane Spartans picked him for the maiden season of the Mzansi Super League T20 tournament. In March 2019, the ICC (International Cricket Council) named him among eight cricketers to watch in the 2019 IPL (Indian Premier League) season. In September 2019, Tshwane Spartans selected Ngidi for the 2019 Mzansi Super League tournament.

International Career

Ngidi played his first T20I versus Sri Lanka in January 2017. He immediately demonstrated his immense potential and was awarded the Player of the Match. Ngidi was also selected for the ODI matches in that series but had to sit them out because of an injury.

In January 2018, Ngidi played his maiden Test against India and grabbed 7/87 in the game, with 6/38 in the 2nd essay to help South Africa notch a 135-run triumph. He played his first ODI in February 2018 against India. The IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings bought him for $78,650 for the 2018 season. Moreover, Ngidi was a member of the South African squad that played in the 2019 ODI World Cup.

In March 2020, Ngidi claimed his first five-for in ODIs versus Australia. In that match, he became the fastest South African bowler to claim 50 ODI wickets (in his 26th game). Ngidi’s last international match before the Covid-19 outbreak was an ODI versus Australia held at Bloemfontein in March 2020.

IPL Career Stats

Ngidi played 7 matches for Chennai Super Kings in the 2018 IPL and bagged 11 wickets at an average of 14.18, an economy rate of 6.00 and a strike rate of 14.18. His best figures in an IPL game are 4/10.

ODI Career Stats

As of July 2020, Ngidi has appeared in 26 ODIs, claiming 53 wickets at an average of 21.50, an economy rate of 5.56 and a strike rate of 23.2 with 1 five-for. His best figures in an ODI are 6/58.

T20I Career Stats

Ngidi has starred in 13 T20Is, snaring 24 scalps at an average of 15.50, an economy rate of 8.65 and a strike rate of 10.7, with one 4-wicket innings haul. His best T20I figures are 4/19.
