In August 2017, the Durban Qalandars picked Pretorius in their team for the maiden edition of the T20 Global League. However, this tournament was cancelled afterwards. Pretorius made his T20 debut in September 2017 for Northerns in the Africa T20 Cup.

In September 2019, North West picked Pretorius in their squad for the 2019-20 edition of the CSA Provincial T20 Cup. In December 2020, South Africa selected him in their squad for the home Test series versus Sri Lanka.
Migael Pretorius was selected in the Test squad as Dwaine Pretorius and Kagiso Rabada had not obtained medical clearance to participate in the matches. Victor Mpitsang, the South African convenor of selectors, said Migael had performed well in domestic cricket to earn the Test call-up. Mpitsang stated Pretorius could learn from this experience to become a better cricketer and that his selection would also encourage other promising players to think positively about their chances of selection.
Last year, Pretorius was among the leading wicket-takers during the domestic season which earned him the attention of national selectors. Pretorius also has a good batting average of 24.85 in first-class cricket so he can stake fair claims to being a capable all-rounder.
