Mujeeb Ur Rahman (born 28 March 2001) is a talented Afghanistan off-break bowler and the first male cricketer born in the 21st century to appear in international matches. He played his first international game at the age of 16.

Mujeeb was the youngest bowler to snare an ODI five-for. He played in Afghanistan’s maiden Test against India in June 2018 which was his first-class debut. Mujeeb’s uncle, Noor Ali Zadran, also played international cricket for Afghanistan.

T20 Franchise and Domestic Career

Mujeeb played his maiden List A match for Speen Ghar Region in the Ghazi Amanullah Khan one-day tournament in August 2017. His T20 debut was made for the Boost Defenders team in the Shpageeza Cricket League in September 2017. Later, in November 2017, Comilla Victorians picked him for the 2017 – 2018 BPL (Bangladesh Premier League) edition.

In January 2018, Kings XI Punjab bought him for the 2018 IPL (Indian Premier League) and 17-year-old Mujeeb became the youngest player to appear in an IPL match. In May 2018, Hampshire signed a contract with him for the 2018 T20 Blast competition in England. Later, in September 2018, Nangarhar picked Mujeeb in their squad for the first season of the APL (Afghanistan Premier League). That year, he claimed 12 wickets in 9 games for Nangarhar Leopards to be the team’s joint-highest wicket-taker.

In February 2019, Middlesex selected Mujeeb for the 2019 T20 Blast edition. Next, in November 2019, Cumilla Warriors picked him for the 2019 – 2020 BPL edition.

International Career

Mujeeb led the wickets tally in the 2017 ACC U19 Asia Cup with 20 scalps in 5 games to help Afghanistan claim the title. His amazing performance earned him a spot in Afghanistan’s ODI squad in December 2017 for a series against Ireland. Mujeeb played his maiden ODI versus Ireland in December 2017 and grabbed 4/24 in 10 overs to help his team to score a victory. His stellar show earned him the Player of the Match award.

In December 2017, Mujeeb was selected in Afghanistan’s team for the 2018 U19 World Cup. His first T20I game was played against Zimbabwe in February 2018. That month, he grabbed his first five-for in ODIs playing against Zimbabwe at Sharjah to become the youngest bowler ever to achieve the feat. He received the Player of the Match award for his effort.

In February 2018, the ICC (International Cricket Council) named Mujeeb among 10 players to watch during the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. The next month, he grabbed 3/33 versus the West Indies in a Super Sixes game during the World Cup qualifiers. This show helped Afghanistan score a 3-wicket win and earned Mujeeb his 3rd ODI Player of the Match.

In the final of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers against the Windies, Mujeeb snared 4/43 to help Afghanistan win by 7 wickets to clinch their maiden World Cup qualifiers title. His 17 dismissals led the wickets tally in this tournament along with Scotland’s Safyaan Sharif and fellow Afghan Rashid Khan.

Test Career Stats

In June 2018, Mujeeb played his first Test against India. He became the first Afghan cricketer to play his maiden first-class game in a Test. Another record set that time was him becoming the youngest cricketer to appear in his nation’s maiden Test match (17 years). As of July 2020, Mujeeb has played one Test only, claiming 1/75 in that game.

ODI Career Stats

Mujeeb has appeared in 40 ODIs, snaring 63 scalps at an average of 22.44, an economy rate of 3.94 and a strike rate of 34.1 with 1 five-for. His best ODI figures are 5/50.

T20I Career Stats

Mujeeb has starred in 19 T20Is, grabbing 25 wickets at an average of 17.72, an economy rate of 6.15 and a strike rate of 17.2 with one 4-wicket haul. His best T20I figures are 4/15.

IPL Career Stats

Mujeeb played for Kings XI Punjab in the 2018 and 2019 IPL seasons, appearing in a total of 16 games in which he claimed 17 wickets at an average of 28.23, an economy rate of 7.95 and a strike rate of 21.29. His best figures in an IPL match are 3/27.

Bowling Style and Career Progress

Mujeeb can bowl conventional off spin and combine it with effective leg spin and probing googlies. This makes him a complete player at such a young age. He idolises his senior Rashid Khan and wishes to emulate his performances.

Mujeeb displayed his precocious talent at the U19 level. He helped Afghanistan beat Bangladesh 3-1 on their home soil in an ODI series. Mujeeb snared a total of 17 scalps, the highest by a bowler in a bilateral U19 ODI series. This excellent performance caught the eye of the BPL franchise Comilla Victorians who picked him in their squad for the 2017 – 2018 BPL edition.

Mujeeb helped Afghanistan win the 2017 U19 Asia Cup. In the semi-final of the tournament, he grabbed a six-for versus Nepal. After that, in the final played against Pakistan, he claimed a five-for to help his team triumph. In total, he snared 20 dismissals in 5 games in that competition.

Mujeeb has been able to perform splendidly at the senior level of international cricket too. His last international match before the Covid-19 outbreak was played against Ireland at Greater Noida in March 2020.
