Ottniel is a 27-year-old right-arm medium-fast bowler from South Africa. Baartman began his first-class career with South Western Districts on 22 January 2015 in the 2014–15 Sunfoil 3-Day Cup. In September 2018, Northern Cape named Baartman in their team for the 2019–20 CSA Provincial T20 Cup. In January 2021, Cricket South Africa included Ottniel in the Test squad for the upcoming series versus Pakistan. However, Baartman was unable to tour with the squad because of a medical problem.

In a Pool A game of the Sunfoil 3-Day Cup in November 2016, KwaZulu-Natal faced off against South Western Districts. Batting first, KwaZulu-Natal were bowled out for 74 in their first innings. The wrecker-in-chief was Ottniel Baartman who took 7/27 in 15.2 overs, snaring the wickets of opener Johnny Riekert, top-order batsmen Senuran Muthusamy and Sibonelo Makhanaya and lower-order batsmen Calvin Savage, Bruce Kerr, Tyron Koen and Daryn Dupavillon. In reply, South Western Districts scored 107, taking a first-innings lead of 33. In their second knock, KwaZulu Natal made 281. This time around, Baartman took 7/68, once again accounting for most of the top-order batsmen and giving him match figures of 14/95. Set to score 249 to win the game, South Western Districts managed to cross the line with 6 wickets to spare.
