Qais Ahmad Kamawal, more often known as Qais, is another young Afghan cricketer. He is 20 years old and was born in Nangarhar, Afghanistan. In the team, he plays the role of a leg-break bowler. Having come into the limelight in the Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia, Qais has been famously known for his unique acrobatic celebration: doing front flips, backflips and somersault after taking a wicket. Qais Ahmad was picked in the Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL’08 edition as a replacement for Tymal Mills who got injured during the season. The young wrist-spinner was backed by outstanding performances in the leagues preceding BBL. He played for Rajshahi Royals in the Bangladesh Premier League. In the 6 games he played, he took 6 wickets for his team.

In the Under-19 World 2018, Qais Ahmad was the main force for Afghanistan. He won many games for his team single-handedly. In the inaugural game of the tournament against Pakistan, Qais Ahmad bowled remarkably well, taking 3 wickets for just 38 runs. In the second game, he took 2 wickets against Sri Lanka. In the quarterfinal match against New Zealand, Qais Ahmad took 4 wickets, taking his team into the semis. He took 2 wickets in the semifinal against Australia but the team could not manage to win. For his fourteen wickets in the World Cup, Qais was named the rising star of his squad.

In the inaugural BBL season for Hobart Hurricanes, Qais Ahmad took 7 wickets in 3 games played. Returning to the team in the following season, much was expected of him but he underperformed compared to his previous season’s results. He took 12 wickets in 15 matches played for Hobart.

In the auction for the Indian Premier League for the 2020 season, Qais Ahmad went unsold, having a base price of 20 lakh Indian Rupees. Qais has had a brief stint for his national side as well. He made his Test debut against Bangladesh in Chattogram. He took 1 wicket his debut game. Afghanistan won the match convincingly and Rashid Khan was awarded the Player of the Match for his outstanding performance. Qais made his T20 debut against Ireland earlier this year. He took 3 wickets in the match. The match was tied and Ireland won the one-over eliminator. In general, he has played more franchise cricket with only 12 first-class games. Needless to say, he needs to play more first-class cricket in order to polish his skills and become a complete package that can be availed in all the formats.
