Needless to say, the exit of such great batsmen as Kallis and De Villiers have hurt South African cricket. However, the emergence of Rassie Van der Dussen has offered the hope of a revival.

Test Career

Rassie Van Der Dussen played his first Test match at Centurion against England in December 2019. Batting first, South Africa were bowled out for 284, in which Van der Dussen’s score was six. In reply, England made 181, conceding a lead of 103. In their second innings, South Africa scored 272, setting England a target of 376 to win. Van der Dussen made his first Test fifty, 51 off 67 balls, which proved to be a match-winning effort as England lost by 107 runs. In the next Test at Cape Town, the batsman got his second half-century in as many matches. Replying to England’s first innings score of 269, the hosts made 223 with Van der Dussen’s top score of 68. In the last Test played at Johannesburg, Van der Dussen failed to open his account in the first innings when, replying to England’s 400 all out, South Africa scored 183. However, chasing 466 to win the game, South Africa were bowled out for 274, leaving England the winners by 191 runs. Van der Dussen fought a lonely battle, falling two runs short of a well-deserved hundred. The next highest score in the innings was 39, scored by Quinton de Kock. In four Test matches he has played so far, Van der Dussen has scored 274 runs at an average of 34.25 with the highest score of 98. He has also taken eight catches.

ODI Career

Rassie Van Der Dussen had a brilliant start to his ODI career with an innings of 83 at Port Elizabeth against the visiting Pakistani team. Unfortunately, though, South Africa lost the match as Pakistan chased down the target of 267 with relative ease. In the next game at Durban, Van der Dussen made a brilliant unbeaten 80 to guide South Africa to victory after Pakistan set them a target of 204. Coming in at the fall of Hashim Amla’s wicket when the South Africa score was 15/1, Van der Dussen held the innings together even as the team was reduced to 29 for 3. After a partnership of 51, David Miller and Klaasen fell in quick succession to leave South Africa floundering at 80/5. Phehlukwayo scored 69 in an unbeaten partnership 124 with Van der Dussen as the two saw the team home in comfort. In the same series, Van der Dussen registered another fifty (50 not out) at Cape Town. In the 2019 World Cup, Van der Dussen registered his highest ODI score of 95 against Australia at Manchester, helping South Africa to victory by a 10-run margin. In 21 ODI matches, Van der Dussen has scored 707 runs at 70.7 with nine fifties, including the highest score of 95.
