Background

Topley was born in Ipswich and his father, Don, and uncle, Peter, were both first-class cricketers. Reece Topley attended Royal Hospital School where his father was a cricket master.

Domestic Career

Topley came into the limelight for a wrong reason in June 2009 when he was just 15 years of age. While bowling in the nets to England player Kevin Pietersen, Topley got a head injury from Pietersen’s ferocious drive. Topley needed stitches on his ear and Pietersen made up by giving the youngster a bat with his autograph.

Topley played his maiden first-class match for Essex against Cambridge MCCU in 2011. He had a good start to his county championship career, bagging five-fors in his first two games against Kent and Middlesex. In May 2011, Essex gave Topley a one-year contract.

He was next selected in England’s u-19 team for their series against the South Africa u-19s. Topley’s skills impressed former England skipper Michael Vaughn who predicted that the bowler had the ability to play Tests for England. In September 2015, Hampshire signed Topley. However, his career has been marred by frequent injuries.

International Career

Topley’s T20I debut was against Australia in August 2015 and his ODI debut was against the same team the next month. In his debut ODI match, he recorded numbers of 0/33. Topley was retained in the ensuing ODI series against Pakistan. He played all four games and picked up 6 wickets to help England to a 3-1 series triumph. Next, he played in the first T20I against Pakistan and grabbed 3/24.

Topley then toured South Africa with the England team and took part in all 5 matches of the ODI series. He recorded numbers of 1/43 in the first outing, 4/50 in the second, 2/39 in the fourth and 3/41 in the last match but England lost the series 2-3. Topley also played in the 2-match T20I series but couldn’t snare a wicket.

After that, Topley participated in the 2016 T20I World Cup but was expensive in his first two games and got dropped as a result of it. Having returned home, he found out that he had a stress fracture in the back. In July 2020, Topley was selected in the England squad for the 3-match ODI series against Ireland.
