Test Career

Shafiul Islam has taken 17 wickets in 11 Test matches at an average of 36.12. He played his first Test against India in Chattogram on 17 January 2010. In the 3rd Test of a series held in November 2014 in Chattogram on Zimbabwe’s tour of Bangladesh, the hosts batted first and piled up a score of 503 before dismissing Zimbabwe for 374 to grab a handy first-innings lead of 129. Islam had figures of 2/50, including the scalps of H Mazakadza and RW Chakabva. In their second knock, Bangladesh scored 319/5 declared to set Zimbabwe a fourth-innings target of 449 before bowling out the visitors for 262 to complete a 186-run win. Islam contributed to the tourists’ second-innings collapse with figures of 2/17 from 9 overs. He played his last Test against South Africa in Potchefstroom on 28 September 2017.

ODI Career

In 60 ODIs, Shafiul Islam has taken 70 wickets at an average of 27.63. He made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in Dhaka on 4 January 2010. Man of the Match Shafiul enabled Bangladesh to reach a target with six wickets in hand when he helped bowl out Ireland in Belfast on 16 July 2010 with bowling figures of 4/59, including the scalps of PR Sterling, AR Cusack, JF Mooney and DT Johnston.   In a league match of the ICC World Cup against Ireland in Dhaka on 11 February 2015, Bangladesh batted first and posted 205 on the board. When Ireland batted, they were bowled out for 178, thanks to Shafiul Islam’s best bowling figures of 4/21, helping to dismiss KJ O’Brien, AC Botha and DT Johnston. He played his last ODI against Zimbabwe in Sylhet on 3 March 2020, a match that Bangladesh won by 4 runs by dismissing the visitors for 318/8 after scoring 322/8 and batting first.

T20I Career

Shafiul Islam has played 20 T20Is to take 20 wickets at an average of 26.60. He played his first T20I against New Zealand in Hamilton on 3 February 2010. On 11 October 2011, in the only T20 held in Dhaka on the West Indies tour of Bangladesh that year, Islam took 2/19 to help restrict the West Indies to 132/8 in their allotted 20 overs, paving the way for the hosts to win with 3 wickets and one ball to spare. In the fourth match of a series in Chattogram on Zimbabwe’s tour of Bangladesh held on 18 September 2019, Bangladesh batted first and posted 175/7 on the board. When Zimbabwe batted, Shafiul Islam registered his best bowling figures of 3/36, with the wickets of SC Williams, RP Buri, and S Mutumbami, and helping to bowl out the tourists for 136. In his last match against Zimbabwe in Dhaka on 9 March 2020, Islam’s 1/19 in 4 overs accounted for the dismissal of opener BRM Taylor, enabling Bangladesh to bowl out the visitors for 152 after batting first and posting 200/3.
