Shane Getkate: A Capable All-Rounder for Ireland

Shane Getkate (born 2 October 1991) is an Irish all-rounder of South African origin. He bats right-handed and bowls right-arm medium-fast. Getkate has Wolff–Parkinson–White syndrome which made him collapse during a u19 match in 2011. In January 2020, Cricket Ireland offered him a central contract.

Early Years

Shane Getkate’s grandfather Robert played cricket for Natal in South Africa. Shane became interested in cricket at an early age and represented Ireland’s u13, u15, and u19 teams. He can bowl at a brisk pace and score quick runs too. In his younger days, he played for London Schools u12, Warwickshire u15 and Malahide CC’s first XI. In a U19 World Cup qualifier in 2010, Getkate bagged 6/32 against Vanuatu to underscore his brilliance.

T20 and Domestic Career

Getkate’s T20 debut was in May 2017 for Northern Knights in the 2017 Inter-Provincial Trophy. He played his first List A match for the same team in the 2017 Inter-Provincial Cup. His first-class debut was also in the same month in the 2017 Inter-Provincial Championship.

In April 2019, Cricket Ireland offered Getkate an Emerging Player Contract for the 2019 season. In July 2019, Belfast Titans picked him in their squad for the maiden edition of the Euro T20 Slam tournament which got cancelled the next month.

International Career

In January 2019, Ireland picked Getkate to join the country’s T20I squads for the quadrangular series in Oman and the series versus Afghanistan in India. His maiden T20I match was against Oman in February 2019. He was the 700th international cap for Ireland.

In June 2019, Getkate was included in the Ireland Wolves team for the home series against Scotland A. Later that month, Ireland selected him in their squad for the series against Zimbabwe. Getkate’s ODI debut was against Zimbabwe in July 2019. In September 2019, Ireland selected him in their team for the 2019 T20 World Cup Qualifiers held in the UAE.
