He has been an important member of the Test team over the last couple of years. As a result of his consistent performance for the side in the longest format of the game, he was included in the West Indies squad for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup played in England and Wales.

The Trinidad-born pacer has developed his game with the ball for the West Indies in Test cricket and demonstrated excellent bowling skills in different conditions.

ODI Career

Shannon Gabriel has been dubbed a Test specialist in world cricket. He made his ODI debut against Australia in a one-day match played at Bridgetown in Barbados in 2016.

Surprisingly, Gabriel was selected for the West Indies squad for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in England. The 32-year old has represented West Indies in 25 one-day matches and claimed 33 wickets at an average of 34.36.

Since his comeback to the ODI side in 2019, Shannon Gabriel has picked up 10 wickets at an average of 35.20. His best bowling performance came against Ireland in a one-day match played at Dublin. He claimed three wickets and conceded 44 runs in his eight overs.

He is certainly one of those quick bowlers who can swing the ball both ways. He has the ability to put in long and accurate spells for his captain when required.

Test Cricket

Shannon Gabriel is certainly one of the premier bowlers of the West Indies Test squad. The 32-year old made his Test debut for the West Indies against England at Lord’s Cricket Ground in 2012.

In his first game, he finished with four wickets to his name and dismissed some high-profile players, such as Kevin Pietersen, Matt Prior and Ian Bell.

Since making his debut, Shannon Gabriel has claimed 142 wickets in 47 Test matches at an average of 30.52. He has claimed six five-wicket hauls and one ten-wicket haul.

Overall, Shannon Gabriel holds an excellent record playing at home compared to his record at the away venues. In 25 Test matches played at home, Gabriel has picked up 88 wickets at an average of 24.22. His overseas numbers are not that impressive with 49 wickets at an average of 40.12.

When it comes to his record against opposing teams, Gabriel’s best numbers are against Pakistan with 25 wickets taken in six matches at a strike rate of 52.1, including two five-wicket hauls.

Against Australia, Shannon Gabriel has had worst numbers in Test cricket with just two wickets in three innings at a strike rate of 81.00.

Shannon Gabriel has managed to claim five-wicket hauls against top teams like England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Tests.

Gabriel’s best bowling figures in an innings came against Sri Lanka with figures of 8 for 62, playing in Gros Islet in 2018.
