Sri Lankan fast bowler Suranga Lakmal has represented his country in all formats of the game and even captained the Test side. He has been the mainstay in a Test team that has witnessed innumerable changes in the recent past. ODI Career

Lakmal played his first ODI in December 2009 at Nagpur in India replacing Dilhara Fernando. Despite his 0/58 off eight overs, Sri Lanka won. In one of Lakmal’s most memorable performances in December 2017, a fine exhibition of swing and seam bowling helped India slump to 112 all out. Lakmal finished with 4/13, his best bowling figures. In another devastating performance, this time against Bangladesh in January 2018, Lakmal took 3/21 to help topple the Bangladesh lineup for 82. On both occasions, Sri Lanka won and the bowler was named the Man of the Match. In August of the same year, Lakmal helped his side to score a tense victory against South Africa, ending an 11-match win-draught against the Proteas. In 85 ODI matches, Suranga Lakmal has taken 107 wickets at an average of 32.50 with an economy rate of 5.45 and the best bowling figures of 4/13, alongside two other four-wicket hauls. He also has a strike rate of 35.7.

Test Career

In his first Test match against the visiting West Indies team in November 2010, Lakmal dismissed Gayle with the first ball of his Test career. The fast bowler got his first fifer in Tests on the tour of South Africa in the 2018 – 2017 season. Despite a 3-0 whitewash suffered by the Sri Lanka team, Lakmal emerged as the most successful bowler for Sri Lanka, taking 12 wickets. In February 2018, Lakmal dismissed Tamim Iqbal to snare his 100th Test victim. A month later, a ball-tampering ban given to Chandimal handed Lakmal the captaincy in a Test match at Barbados against the West Indies. Lakmal led Sri Lanka to a win, making the side the first Asian team to win a Test match at the venue. Entrusted with the captaincy in similar circumstances in South Africa in July 2018, Lakhmal guided Sri Lanka to win the second Test of a series by 278 runs. After his absence from the game caused by dengue fever, Lakmal returned to the Test squad in January 2020. With figures of 3/53 and 4/27, Lakmal was instrumental In Sri Lanka’s 10-wicket victory in the game. In 61 Test matches, Suranga Lakmal has taken 151 wickets at an average of 37.42, an economy rate of 3.05 and a strike rate of 73.5. His best performance in an innings has been 5/54 while his best match performance has been 7/80. He has taken five wickets in an innings on three separate occasions.

T20I Career

In a T20I career, which has not been as impressive as his Test and ODI journeys, Lakmal has played 11 matches, and taken eight wickets at an average of 41.25 with the best bowling figures of 2/26.
