De Bruyn has scored 428 runs in 12 matches at an average of 19.45. He played his first Test against New Zealand in Hamilton in March 2017. In December 2018, in the 1st match of a series on Pakistan’s tour of Australia played at Centurion, Pakistan batted first and were bowled out for 181. Batting at number 4, De Bruyn scored 29 to help South Africa to a score of 223. In their second innings, Pakistan could not make more than 190, paving the way for an easy victory for South Africa. De Bruyn accomplished his highest Test score against Sri Lanka in Colombo in July 2018, in the 2nd game of a series on South Africa’s tour of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka batted first in the match and posted a score of 338 before bowling out South Africa for 124. Sri Lanka chose not to enforce the follow-on and declared their second innings closed at 275/5 to set South Africa a winning target of 499. Batting at number 3, De Bruyn scored 101 and shared a 2nd-wicket stand of 57 with Elgar and a 6th-wicket stand of 123 with Temba Bavuma. However, the South Africa score could not go beyond 290. In January 2019, South Africa hosted Pakistan in Johannesburg in the 3rd match of a series on Pakistan’s tour of South Africa, in which the hosts batted first. Batting at number 4, De Bruyn scored 49 and shared a 2nd-wicket stand of 126 with Markram and a 4th-wicket stand of 75 with Zubayr Hamza to help South Africa to a score of 262. They bowled out Pakistan for 185 and scored 303 in their second knock to set Pakistan a target of 381. Pakistan managed only 273 in their second knock to hand South Africa a 107-run win. De Bruyn last appeared in a Test against India in Ranchi in October 2019.
De Bruyn has played 2 T20I games and scored 26 runs at an average of 13.00 with the highest score of 19. He played his first T20I match against Sri Lanka at Centurion in January 2017. That game, the first of a series on Sri Lanka’s tour of South Africa, on 20 January 2017, was reduced to 10 overs a side because of rain. South Africa batted first. Batting at number 3, De Bruyn scored 19 off 10 balls with 2 fours and a six to help South Africa to a score of 126/5 in 10 overs. Replying, Sri Lanka were restricted to 107/6, handing South Africa a 19-run win. He last appeared in a T20I against Sri Lanka in Johannesburg in January 2017. In that game, Sri Lanka batted first and were bowled out for 113 before Sri Lanka chased down the modest target with 3 wickets and 2 balls to spare.
