An effective medium pacer and a late-order hard-hitter, Perera made his name as a cricketer who could contribute equally in both departments. At a time the national team lacked power hitters down the order, Perera became the mainstay in the limited-overs team and played a key role in the death overs to increase the team’s run rate. He has also become a T20 globetrotter, playing in various franchise leagues around the world.

Thisara Perera’s ODI career

The all-round value and bits-and-pieces nature of his playing style made Thisara Perera ideal for ODI cricket. He had his ODI debut against India in 2009 at Eden Gardens and has played in 164 ODIs for his country since then. Perera has achieved 2316 runs at an average of 20.13 with his only hundred scored against New Zealand in 2019. Perera has also taken 172 wickets with five four-wicket hauls and four five-wicket hauls. His best of 6/44 came against Pakistan at Pallekele in 2012. Speaking of World Cups, he has played in three of them – 2011, 2015 and 2019 – scoring 167 runs and taking 14 wickets with the best of 3/24. In List A cricket, Perera has 3642 runs with two centuries and a total of 279 wickets. He has played the biggest number of matches in domestic cricket in the List A format, taking the field 243 times.

T20I career

Thisara Perera’s hard-hitting skills made him a valuable player in the shortest format of the game. He has played in 81 T20Is for Sri Lanka, making 1201 runs at a strike rate of 152.6 with three half-centuries. He has also picked up 51 wickets at an average of 32.84 with the best figures of 3/24. Perera made his T20I debut in 2010 against Zimbabwe in Providence. Despite playing T20I cricket for a decade, all his above-fifty scores for Sri Lanka have been made in the period from 2018. His best of 61 came against West Indies at Lord’s off 37 balls with seven fours and three sixes. He famously hit the six that completed Sri Lanka’s World T20 triumph in 2014 against India.

Thisara Perera’s Test career

Sri Lankan all-rounder has always been a limited-overs player and only performed shortly in Test cricket before being dropped. He made his Test debut against England at Cardiff in 2011 with one half-century. He has also picked up 11 wickets in the format with the best of 4/63. Interestingly, his highest Test score of 75 and best innings haul of 4/63 came against Pakistan in his last Test match at Pallekele in 2012. He has never played Test cricket since 2012. His first-class career came to a halt in 2018 after he had played only 33 first-class matches, making a single century and taking 56 wickets.

Thisara Perera IPL career

Thisara Perera’s hitting skills and all-round potential made him one of the few Sri Lankan players to be in demand in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In his IPL career, Perera has played for Chennai Super Kings, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kings XI Punjab and Rising Pune Supergiant, a total of six franchises. He participated in 37 IPL games from 2010 to 2016 but has never appeared in the league since then. Overall, Perera has made 422 runs at an average of just less than 20 with the highest score of 40. In as many games, he has 31 wickets with the best figures of 3/20.

Franchise cricket

Sri Lankan all-rounder has played in other franchise leagues aside from the Indian Premier League. He has made a mark in the Bangladesh Premier League, Caribbean Premier League, Big Bash League in Australia, Pakistan Super League and the T20 Blast in England. In total, Perera has played in 277 T20s, scoring 3435 runs at an average of 20.44 with seven half-centuries. He also has 238 wickets in T20s with the best of 5/26.
