ODI Career

Maruma had begun his career as a spinner, though he was later classified as an all-rounder. Batting down the order, he made 7 runs in his first ODI against South Africa at Bulawayo in 2007. In 9.5 overs he conceded 51 runs without taking a wicket, in a match the touring South Africans won by five wickets. His best bowling figures of 2/50 in an ODI came at Nairobi against Kenya in October 2008. Batting first, Zimbabwe scored 303/6. Maruma took the wickets of AR White and AR Cusack to help bowl Kenya out for 147. He had a good showing with the bat in the next game at the same venue. Kenya batted first and piled up 285/9. Maruma, who opened the innings for Zimbabwe in the game, made 32 in 51 balls as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 190 in 38.1 overs. In his ODI career, Maruma had some good starts that he failed to convert into big innings. For instance, he made 18 at Harare against Pakistan in 2013. Against India, in 2016, he had scores of 29 and 17 at the same venue. In his last ODI match played in April 2019 at Harare against the UAE, Maruma made his highest ODI score of 35 in a match that Zimbabwe won by the DL method. In 21 ODI matches, Maruma has scored 196 runs at an average of 11.52 with the highest score of 35. He has also taken four wickets at 57.50 with his best bowling figures of 2/50.

T20I Career

Maruma played his first T20I match in October 2008 at King City in Canada, against Sri Lanka. He made just three runs before being run out in a Zimbabwe innings of 106/8 in 17 overs of a rain-curtailed game. Sri Lanka chased down the target in 16 overs. Maruma did not bowl at all in the match. In the next game at the same venue, Maruma took 1/8 to help restrict Canada to 135/7.  Zimbabwe made an identical score but won the tied match by a bowl-out. Playing against the UAE at Sylhet in March 2014, when he batted at number seven, Maruma made 22 not out in a successful run chase. Maruma last appeared for Zimbabwe in a T20I against Singapore in September 2019. In 13 T20I matches, Maruma has scored 100 runs at an average of 11.11 with the top score of 23 not out. He has also taken one wicket with the best bowling figures of 1/8.

Test Career

He played his first Test match at Harare against Bangladesh in April 2013. Opening the innings, he made just 10 runs in each innings of a match that Zimbabwe won by 335 runs. He was not considered again for selection until January 2020 when Sri Lanka toured Zimbabwe. Maruma failed to open his account on his return to the test arena in a drawn encounter at Harare. He was then selected to be on Zimbabwe’s tour of Bangladesh in February 2020. In the only Test match at Dhaka, Maruma scored 7 and 41 as Zimbabwe suffered an innings defeat. Batting at number seven, Maruma came to the crease with the scoreboard reading 5/104. His was the ninth wicket to fall with the scoreboard reading 181.
