Strong competition and regular injuries have prevented Astle from cementing his position in the New Zealand side. In Jan. 2020, he retired from first-class matches to concentrate on white-ball cricket.

Background

Astle’s home town is Palmertson North and his father, Alec, played for Central Districts in New Zealand domestic cricket in the 1970s. In the 2006 u-19 world cup, Astle notched up the third-highest run tally after India’s Cheteshwar Pujara and Ireland’s Eoin Morgan. He played his maiden first-class match for Canterbury state in the Plunked Shield in Dec. 2005. Astle played mainly as an opening batter in his initial years.

In Mar. 2010, Astle’s career turned when he bagged a five-for Canterbury in a first-class game. Next, in the 2010-11 season, he grabbed 37 scalps at 29.08 to help Canterbury win the championship. In the following 2011-12 season, he claimed 31 wickets.

In Oct. 2019, Astle reached the landmark of 300 wickets in first-class matches, the first Canterbury bowler to do so. In June 2020, Canterbury offered him a contract for the 2020-21 domestic season.

International Career

In his debut test match in Nov. 2012 against Sri Lanka at Colombo, Astle cracked 35 in the second essay and also claimed his maiden test scalp who was Prasanna Jaywardene. But he could not sustain this promising start and did not play another international match till 2016. Astle’s T20I debut was against Pakistan at Auckland in Jan. 2016. He played in two T20I games in the series in which he bowled a total of 4 overs, conceding 41 runs.

Astle had good success in New Zealand domestic cricket both in the Plunket Shield and in the white-ball formats. He next played for the national team against Pakistan in 2016-17 and bowled 4 overs in the only test he featured in. Injuries prevented him from gaining a settled place in the New Zealand team.

For the 2019 ODI world cup, the New Zealand selectors picked Ish Sodhi ahead of Astle because the former had more experience in international cricket. After the world cup, Astle was named in the Kiwi squad for their tour of Sri Lanka.
