Dawid Malan is one of the fine left-handed batsmen to play for the England team in recent years. Malan bats in the middle order and can bowl his occasional leg-spin with the ball. He has represented England in all three formats of the game even though he has played only one ODI match. Dawid Malan topped the ICC T20I rankings for batsmen in September 2020.

Early Life

Dawid Malan was born on 3 September 1987 in London, England. Malan first played for the Boland Cricket club in South Africa in early 2006. Malan joined Middlesex in July 2006. Dawid Malan`s father and younger brother too have played cricket for the England local clubs.  Malan is currently representing Yorkshire in the English county circuit and has also played for teams such as Peshawar Zalmi, Islamabad United, Khulna Titans, Barisal Bulls, Capetown Blitz and Cumilla Warriors across various leagues around the world.

International Career

T20I

Dawid Malan made his debut for the England team in a T20I match against South Africa in Cardiff in June 2017. He scored a magnificent 78 in his debut match to help his team win.  He also went on to represent England in the subsequent Australia, New Zealand and South Africa tours. He kept performing consistently in T20I matches whenever he got opportunities. He also scored his maiden century against New Zealand in 2019 which has been the fastest century by an English player in T20Is made in 48 balls. He has played 16 T20I matches and scored 682 runs with a century and 7 fifties to his name. He scored 129 runs in the 3-match Australia T20I series and topped the ICC T20I rankings for batsmen for the first time in September 2020.

Test

Dawid Malan made his Test debut soon after his T20I debut against South Africa in 2017. He has a good run in the team featuring in the home tours of the West Indies, New Zealand and Pakistan. He was also a permanent member of the playing XI in the 2017 Ashes tour where he scored his maiden century in Perth. He was subsequently dropped from the Test side in 2018 after failing to make a big impact. Malan has played 15 Test matches and scored 724 runs with a century and 5 fifties to his name so far.

ODI

Malan has played for England in their ODI match against Ireland in Dublin in May 2019. He was dismissed for 24 runs in that match and has never been selected in ODI squads since then.

Overall Career

Malan was one of the late bloomers in the international circuit arena, performing after the age of 30 but has been a prominent member in the local county and T20 leagues for a long time. He has played 191 first-class matches, 149 List A matches and 206 T20 matches in his career spanning over 14 years. He has an overall run tally of 22639 runs with 41 centuries and 117 half-centuries to his name. He has also picked 124 wickets with his leg-spin although only one of them came in the international arena.
