In January 2019, he became the world’s leading test all-rounder according to the ICC rankings, becoming the first West Indian player to record this feat since the legendary Gary Sobers. He was named Test Player of the Year in August 2019 by the Windies cricket board.

International Career

Holder starred in the first ODI game against Pakistan in July 2013, grabbing 4/13. In the third match of that series, he clobbered an unbeaten 19 off 9 balls to help Windies tie the game. His first T20I was against the Kiwis in January 2014 with him recording 2/34 in three overs. In Holder’s Test debut played against the Kiwis, he scalped 2/50 and scored a total of 90 runs in the game but couldn’t prevent the Windies from losing the match.

Captaincy

Holder replaced Dwayne Bravo as captain of the Windies ODI team. At the age of 23, he was the youngest West Indian to become captain. In September 2015, Holder was appointed skipper of the Test team. His excellent leadership skills were demonstrated in the 2015 ODI World Cup in which his team reached the quarters but lost to the Kiwis despite Holder’s 42 off 26.

In April 2015, he recorded his maiden Test hundred playing against England. His effort helped his team draw the match. Though the Windies lost quite a few series, both away and home, under Holder’s leadership, many West Indian cricket experts praised his captaincy skills as he played with a team that had no accomplished players such as Marlon Samuels and Chris Gayle.

In July 2017, Holder grabbed his first five-for in ODIs (5/27) versus India to help a 11-run Windies win. His impressive bowling and captaincy earned him the Player of the Match award. In March 2018, Holder set a record becoming the fastest West Indian player to reach the landmark of 1,000 runs and 100 scalps in ODIs.

Holder was also the skipper of the Windies during the 2019 ODI World Cup. He recorded 100 ODI appearances in the game versus Bangladesh in June 2019. In July 2019, Holder achieved the record of being the first West Indies captain to claim 100 scalps in ODIs. Next, in August 2019, he claimed his 100th victim in Tests. Holder was named skipper of the Windies Test team for their away series versus England beginning in July 2020.
