Bhanuka’s talent was recognised early and he got selected to the Sri Lanka squad for the U19 World Cup in 2014. In the season that followed, Minod made waves in local tournaments which saw him named to represent squads in Kandy, Dambulla and Galle.

Though he got a call to join the T20I team on the tour to the UAE in 2017, Bhanuka was unable to do so for personal reasons. The selectors persisted in their decision to give Minod his international break and named him in the team selected to tour Pakistan in September 2019.

In October 2019, Minod was run out without scoring in the second of the two T20Is Sri Lanka played and won on the tour. He did not get to bat in the other one.

Earlier, on 2 October 2019, in Bhanuka’s ODI debut game in Karachi, Sri Lanka took first strike. Batting at number 5, Bhanuka had scored 36 off 39 balls, with 2 sixes, before he was unfortunately run out. He shared a 74-run partnership with AK Perera to propel Sri Lanka to 297/9. Pakistan chased down the target with 5 wickets and 10 balls to spare.
