His under-19 career, where he took 45 wickets, had brought him into the limelight and had made his name well-known in Bangladesh cricket even before he made his senior team debut. Despite having troubles with his action, Saifuddin made a successful career at the first-class level too, debuting as early as 2014.

Mohammad Saifuddin’s T20I Career

Mohammad Saifuddin made his debut first in a format he had thrived in at the domestic level – T20s. Saifuddin made his T20 International debut for Bangladesh against Sri Lanka in April 2017 at Colombo. He went wicketless in a three-over spell but his ability to bowl variations caught the audience’s attention. In three years, he played 15 T20Is for Bangladesh, taking 14 wickets at an average of 31.07 and an economy rate of 8.70. It was Saifuddin’s death bowling in particular that made him a promising star of the shortest format of the game. In September 2019, in a T20I against Afghanistan at Dhaka, Saifuddin picked up his career-best haul of 4/33. He has gone wicketless in five out of 15 matches in this format. His soaring economy rate is perhaps the only concern of Saifuddin. He is also a handy lower-order batsman and has the highest score of 39 and a strike rate greater than 110.

ODI Career

Though it was T20Is that Saifuddin debuted first and looked most threatening in, he has gone on to represent Bangladesh in more One Day Internationals. In 22 ODIs, Saifuddin has 31 wickets at an average of 31.35 and a strike rate just above 30. Mohammad Saifuddin made his ODI debut against South Africa in October 2017 at Kimberley in a bilateral ODI series game. Saifuddin was considered to be a death bowling solution, particularly alongside Mustafizur Rahman. His slower balls and low full tosses were difficult to get away from and slowly Saifuddin became a regular in the One Day lineup. At Sylhet in 2020, Saifuddin picked up his career-best haul of 4/41 in an ODI against Zimbabwe. In the same series, he also achieved figures of 3/22 at the same venue. Saifuddin was reasonably successful in England during the World Cup in 2019, picking up 13 wickets in 7 matches at an average of 32.07. He has also been more useful with the bat in this format, scoring two half-centuries and averaging over 30.

T20 Franchise Cricket

He made his T20 debut in 2016 in the Bangladesh Premier League playing for Comilla Victorians. He also finished as the highest wicket-taker in the 2018 – 2019 Dhaka Cricket League tournament, picking up 25 wickets while playing for Abahani Limited.

Despite his success in the Bangladesh Premier League, he hasn’t had many opportunities in other franchise leagues around the world.
