Sadeera Samarawickrama is a 25-year-old right-handed batsman and a wicket-keeper who has played international cricket for Sri Lanka. Samarawickrama drew the attention of selectors at the U19 level and they rewarded him with a place in Sri Lanka’s U19 squad to the 2014 World Cup. After that, Sadeera came good in domestic competitions with a prolific run of scores to merit a call-up to the senior national squad in October 2017. Sadeera’s first-class record mirrors his appetite for runs – the most telling stat is in the 17 50-plus scores, including 6 tons, he has accomplished in 28 matches.

Test Career

Sadeera has scored 125 runs in 4 Test matches at 15.62. He played his first Test match against Pakistan in Dubai in October 2017, in which he scored 38 in his debut innings, contributing to Sri Lanka’s score of 482. Though Sri Lanka were bundled out for 96 in their second knock, their handy first innings lead of 220 enabled them to set a target of 317 before wrapping up the Pakistan innings for 248 to complete a 68-run rout. Sadeera was in the Sri Lanka squad on the tour of India, where he played three matches, two of which were drawn. He had starts of 23, 13 and 33 respectively in all three tests but failed to convert any of them into big scores. He last appeared in a Test against India in Delhi in December 2017.

ODI Career

Sadeera has scored 138 runs in 7 ODIs at 19.71. He played his first ODI against Pakistan in Sharjah on 20 October 2017. He failed to open his account in a match that Pakistan won. On 23 October 2018, Sri Lanka and England met in an ODI in Colombo. Sri Lanka batted first. Sadeera opened the innings with Niroshan Dickwella. The pair put on a 1st-wicket partnership of 137 before Sadeera lost his wicket for 54 scored off 48 balls with 8 fours. The rest of the batsmen built on the platform set up by the openers and Sri Lanka scored 366/6 before restricting England to 132/9 in 26.1 overs. Sri Lanka won the match by 219 runs by the D/L method. Sadeera last appeared in an ODI, against Pakistan in Karachi in September 2019.

T20I Career

Sadeera has scored 97 runs in 7 T20I games at 13.85. He has also taken 4 catches and effected 2 stumpings. Sadeera scored 23 in his first T20I against Pakistan in a losing cause in Abu Dhabi on 26 October 2017. On the next day, against the same opponents and at the same venue, Samarawickrama scored 32 off 31 balls. This match was also won by Pakistan. Sadeera last appeared in a T20I against Pakistan in Lahore on 9 October 2019. Samarawickrama opened the innings with Gunathilaka and scored 12 off 12 balls.
