Adam Zampa wanted to be a fast bowler. However, thanks to the restriction on the number of fast bowlers in U-14 cricket in Australia, Zampa decided to follow in the footsteps of his idol, Shane Warne, to become a leg spinner. No doubt, Adam Zampa’s profile couldn’t be complete without mentioning that luck played a key role in his selection to the Australian ODI and T20I sides in 2016, after three years spent with South Australia, that happened because of the departure of the team’s regular spinner, Nathan Lyon.

Adam Zampa’s ODI Debut

Adam Zampa made his international debut in a one-day match against New Zealand at Wellington after Australia had lost the previous match. Batting first, the Kiwis scored 281/9. Steve Smith’s wards chased down the target in 46.3 overs, losing six wickets in the process. Zampa impressed with two wickets for 57 and, importantly, got rid of NZ skipper, Kane Williamson, who appeared set at 60. After Williamson had hit him for six over extra cover, Zampa tossed up the next delivery inviting Williamson to repeat the shot, showing that he was not afraid of getting hit, an important trait of a wicket-taking bowler. Smith at extra cover did the rest and Zampa had his first international wicket. After that, despite Zampa being regularly selected to the ODI squad, he was never given a Test cap.

Adam Zampa: IPL 2016 Heroics

With 12 wickets in five games, the young Australian left his mark on the IPL 2016. Adam Zampa who was bought by the Rising Pune Supergiants was not considered for selection in the first nine of 14 league matches. Playing his first game against RCB, Zampa made an immediate impact with 2/35 in a losing cause. In the next match (against Sunrisers Hyderabad), in a four-over spell, the leg spinner grabbed 6/19, including the wickets of Williamson, Yuvraj, and Henriques, and won the Man of the Match award. After a rain-curtailed match against Kolkata Knight Riders, Zampa’s figures of 3/21 against Delhi Daredevils, and 1/32 against Kings XI Punjab, helped Supergiants to finish ahead of KXIP on the points table.

Adam Zampa Bowling in T20Is

In T20Is too, Adam Zampa had a good year in 2016, with several three-wicket hauls. He helped Australia to score series wins in the last four competitions in 2019 and 2020, with impressive figures of 3/14 and 2/9 against Sri Lanka and South Africa respectively. Zampa’s 33 wickets in 30 T20Is at an average of 19.25 seems like a great proof of the young leggie’s wicket-taking ability.

Adam Zampa’s Revival in 2019

In the wake of the ball-tampering scandal that caused the temporary exit of Smith and Warner, 2017 and 2018 turned out to be fairly moderate years for Cricket Australia. Playing for a weakened team appeared to affect Adam Zampa’s performance too. However, the tide turned for Zampa on Australia’s tour of India in 2019. Australia lost the first two matches in which Zampa had figures of 2/49 and 2/62. Then came a brilliant turnaround in which Zampa played a major role. Australia won all three of the remaining matches to record their first-ever ODI series win in India. In the third match at Ranchi, chasing 314 for a win, India were cruising along when Zampa (3/70) got rid of Kohli for 123 and India slumped to 281 all out. In the fourth match at Mohali, Australia chased down 359 and Adam Zampa got 1/57. In the last match of the series, India chased 273 and were bundled out for 237, with Zampa taking 3/46.

Adam Zampa: Cricketer of the Future

In a series against Pakistan at Sharjah, Adam Zampa registered his best figures in an ODI, taking 4/43 to help bundle Pakistan out for 186 in a run chase of 267. In 2020, Zampa was once again among the wickets in a three-match series against India, including the prize scalp of Kohli. In his last ODI in March 2020, Zampa helped Australia to score a victory over New Zealand by taking 2/50, including the coveted wickets of Williamson and Grandhomme. In 55 ODI matches played so far, Zampa has taken 75 wickets at an average of 36.01. His wicket-taking ability could lead to Zampa breaking into the Australia Test side in the foreseeable future.
