Biography

Prithvi Shaw was born in Gaya, in the Indian state of Bihar, in November 1999. His father migrated to Mumbai searching for work and after, AAP Entertainment offered Prithvi a contract in 2010 in recognition of his talent. Indian Oil augmented the contract with a sponsorship deal. His penchant for runs resulted in prolific performances in school cricket, both in India and in England, where Prithvi played in 2012 for Cheadle Hulme School in Manchester by invitation. The next year, he spent the summer in England after an invitation from Julian Wood Cricket Academy. He shone for India in U-17 cricket before being selected to represent Mumbai in the 2016 -2017 season.

Test Career

Shaw has scored 335 runs in four Test matches at 55.83 with the highest score of 134, his only ton. He played his first match against the visiting West Indies team in Rajkot on 4 October 2018. He made a century on debut, with his 134 helping India to post a mammoth score of 649/9 declared. That innings came in 154 balls in nearly four hours spent at the crease. After the early loss of Rahul which left the Indian scorecard reading 3/1 at the end of the first over Shaw was involved in a 206-run stand with Cheteshwar Pujara. Prithvi’s was the third Indian wicket to fall with the score at 232. In reply, the West Indies were bowled out for 181 and, following on, could make only 196, leaving India winners by an innings and 272 runs.

In the second match in Hyderabad, the West Indies batted first and posted 311. India replied with 375, to which Shaw contributed 70. That 70 came at a quick clip in just 53 balls in a 95-minute innings during which Shaw shared an opening stand of 61 with KL Rahul and had a second-wicket partnership of 37 with Pujara.

With a set target of 72 in the fourth innings, India won by 10 wickets with Shaw making 33 not out in his second knock. After that, Shaw got injured and was selected again only on India’s tour of New Zealand in February 2020. In the first Test held in Wellington, he scored 16 and 14 in a match India lost. Shaw had a better showing in the second Test in Christchurch when he made 54 in the first innings to help India to a team total of 242. After India had managed to get a wafer-thin lead of 7 runs in the first innings they were bowled out for 124 in the second innings to lose the series 2-0. Shaw made 14 in his second innings.

He made 20 off 21 balls in a first-wicket partnership of 50 runs with Mayank Agarwal, setting the platform for a team score of 347/4. He had three fours in his 37-minute stay at the wicket. However, New Zealand chased down the target with 4 wickets and 11 balls to spare. In the second game in Auckland, New Zealand batted first and made 273/8. Shaw scored 24 before he was the second man out with the score reading 34/2 as India went on to lose the game by 22 runs. That was a quickfire knock that came in just 19 balls with 6 fours to embellish it. India lost an early wicket, that of Mayank Agarwal, with the score reading 8/1. After that, Shaw was involved in a second-wicket stand of 24 with Virat Kohli and a third-wicket partnership of 30 with Shreyas Iyer. Then, the opener departed with the scoreboard reading 62/3. Prithvi Shaw in IPL

Delhi Daredevils invested about $160,000 to acquire Prithvi Shaw’s services in the 2018 IPL season. He was just a few months past 18 years of age and became the youngest opener in an IPL game when he faced Kings XI Punjab on 23 April 2018. In that innings, Shaw made 22 off 15 balls with 3 fours and a six to help DD to a flier in the powerplay overs in their run chase of 144.
