Rubel Hossain is a pacy fast bowler from Bangladesh whose natural talent made him a great prospect for Bangladesh cricket in the early 2010s. Rubel Hossain was born in Khulna and made an instant impression on the audience in the Khulna Division games held in 2007. His pace forced batsmen on the back foot and Bangladesh, who had never had such fast bowlers before, put him in their lineup across all formats by 2009. However, his career has not quite developed the way it had started.

Rubel Hossain’s ODI Career

Rubel Hossain made his One Day International debut in 2009 against Sri Lanka and had a great performance in his first game, picking up 4/33 as Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka at Dhaka. With a slightly slingy action, Rubel Hossain generated skiddy bounce that helped him unsettle batsmen. Rubel Hossain has played 101 ODIs taking 126 wickets at an average of 34.12. Against New Zealand at Dhaka, Rubel Hossain picked up his career-best figures of 6/26. His next best figures in ODIs also came against New Zealand at the same venue when he took 4/25 in 2010. He is the fourth-highest wicket-taker for Bangladesh in One Day Internationals after Mashrafe Mortaza, Shakib Al Hasan and Abdur Razzak.

T20I Career

Rubel Hossain was considered to become an instant hit in One Day International cricket given his slingy action, handy bouncers and pinpoint yorkers, therefore, his success in T20Is was also taken for granted. Rubel had all the armoury to succeed in the format as a pace bowler and it was a sure thing that he would thrive. After 27 T20Is that have brought just 28 wickets at a not-so-good economy of 9.3  such a certain opinion has started to fade. Rubel has the best of 3/20 in this format at the international level and hasn’t quite lived up to his reputation of a death bowler. He made his T20I debut in 2009 against India at Nottingham during the T20 World Cup. In 10 years of his T20I career, he has played only 27 matches for Bangladesh.

Rubel Hossain’s Test Career

While Rubel Hossain’s limited-overs career had a decent run, the fast bowler has struggled in the longest format of the game despite him still being a part of the setup. Rubel made his Test debut in 2009 against the West Indies at Kingston, picking up a three-wicket haul in his first innings. In 11 years, though, Rubel has played just 27 Test matches picking up 36 wickets at a shocking average of 76.77 and a strike rate over 110. His career-best figures of 5/166 came against New Zealand in 2010. He has been in and out of the Test team making a very recent comeback in 2020 against Pakistan at Rawalpindi after missing Test cricket for two years.

T20 Franchise Cricket

Rubel Hossain made his Bangladesh Premier League debut in 2012 playing for Chittagong Kings. In 2015, he played for the Sylhet Superstars but he later moved to Rangpur Riders where he played the next two seasons. In 2019, Dhaka Dynamites got the player to themselves. Overall, Rubel Hossain has played in 111 T20 games picking up 137 wickets at an average of 22.83 with the best of 5/32. His domestic T20 career has been a lot more successful than the one at the international level.
