Washington Sundar is a right-arm off-spin bowler who bats left-handed. The 21-year-old player has represented India in ODI and T20I cricket, providing India with much-sought-after fresh talent in the shortest formats of the game. While Sundar’s main role is that of a bowler, he is no rabbit with the bat either.

ODI Career

Sundar has played only one ODI match against Sri Lanka in Mohali on 13 December 2017. In that match, India batted first and scored 392/4 before restricting Sri Lanka to a score of 251/8, registering a 141-run win. Washington bowled a full quota of 10 overs, conceding 65 runs and taking a wicket, that of top-order batsman Lahiru Thirimanne whom he clean-bowled. However, the young all-rounder did not get any more call-ups to play ODIs for India.

T20I Career

Washington Sundar has taken 19 wickets in 23 T20I games at 27.73. He played his first T20I game against Sri Lanka in Mumbai on 24 December 2017. Sundar took 1/22 to help restrict Sri Lanka to 135/7, paving the way for India to ease to victory with 5 wickets and 4 balls to spare. He began to take wickets regularly to underscore his utility to the team. He returned match-winning figures of 2/21 in Colombo on 12 March 2018 to help restrict Sri Lanka to a score of 152/9 in 19 overs in a rain-hit game, paving the way for India to register a 6-wicket win with 9 balls to spare. He registered his best bowling figures of 3/22 against Bangladesh in Colombo on 12 March 2018. In that game, India batted first and posted a score of 176/3. Sundar helped restrict Bangladesh to 159/6 in their allotted overs to help India win the game by 17 runs.

Sundar delivered another brilliant bowling performance against the West Indies in Lauderhill, the USA, on 4 August 2019 in a rain-curtailed game. Batting first, India batted their whole quota of overs to post a score of 167/5. Rain intervention reduced the game to 15.3 overs and an adjusted target of 121. Sundar took 1/12 in 3 overs to help restrict the West indies to a score of 98/4, helping India to a 22-run victory by the D/L method.

Sundar last appeared in a T20I against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui on 2 February 2020. In that game, India batted first and scored 163/3. Sundar contributed figures of 1/20 to help restrict New Zealand to 163/3, ensuring a 7-run win for India.

IPL Career

Washington Sundar has taken 16 wickets in 21 matches at 28.18. He enjoyed his first IPL season in 2017 when he took 8 wickets in 11 games at 23.12 with his best bowling figures of 3/16. Playing for Rising Pune Supergiants, Sundar achieved those bowling returns in the first qualifier against Mumbai Indians on 16 May 2017 after RPS had posted a score of 162/4. With the wickets of Sharma, Rayudu, and Pollard, Sundar ripped apart Mumbai Indians’ famed middle-order to help dismiss them for 142/9. In the 2018 season, Sundar took 4 wickets from 7 games at 48.00 with his best bowling figures of 2/22. Playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sundar helped restrict Kings XI Punjab to 155, enabling RCB to win the game by 4 wickets. Though he played only 3 games in 2019, Sundar returned figures of 3/24 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, enabling RCB to register one of their most important wins of the season. In that game, Sunrisers scored 175/7. Sundar took the wickets of top-order batsmen Guptill, Vijay Shankar and Manish Pandey to keep Sunrisers to a score of 175/7, paving the way for RCB to pull off a 4-wicket win.
