William Porterfield is a left-hand batsman who, as a rule, opens the batting for the Ireland team. In November 2019, he stepped down as captain of the team in Tests and ODIs.

William Porterfield was born on 6 September 1984 in a small village in Northern Ireland. He made his debut for the Ireland team in 2006 in the ODI against Scotland. In 2008, he was appointed captain of the Ireland team for the first time. During his career, William Porterfield has represented several English county teams such as Gloucestershire and Warwickshire.

One-Day Internationals

ODIs were the only format Ireland was participating in when Porterfield joined the team in 2006. Later on, in 2008, he took over the captaincy from Trent Johnson and performed as captain in 253 matches. He led the Ireland team in the 2011 and 2015 World Cups and helped them win matches against England and West Indies.

In total, he has played 139 ODI matches and has scored 4091 runs for the team with 11 centuries and 17 half-centuries to his name. His century against Bangladesh scored in the 2007 World Cup played a key role in his team winning against Bangladesh in the Super 8. His excellent performances with the bat helped him to get the ICC Affiliate and Associate Player of the Year in 2009.
