Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are at the top of this list with 10 consecutive wins spanning two IPL seasons – 2014 and 2015. KKR are the only team to reach two digits when it comes to winning consecutive matches in the IPL.
The winning streak started with their victory against Delhi Daredevils (DD) in the league match of the IPL 2014. They had won just 2 matches of the previous 7 games before that. However, since the victory against DD, KKR went all the way to the finals with a winning streak of 9 consecutive wins in that season and managed to clinch their second title in 3 years. Out of those 9 wins, they defeated Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) 3 times, including the final, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) twice and DD, MI, CSK and SRH once each. Their 10th victory came against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the opening match of the next season in 2015. However, they lost to RCB in the second game of the IPL 2015 and thus the 10-match-long winning streak was ended.
2. Kings XI Punjab – 8 Wins in a Row – IPL 2013/14
Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), currently known as Punjab Kings (PBKS), have never won an IPL trophy. However, in the IPL seasons 2013 and 2014, they managed to win 8 consecutive games – 3 in 2013 and 5 in 2014.
The winning streak started with a victory against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the 63rd match of the IPL 2013. KXIP won the remaining 2 matches that season and continued this form the next season with 5 successive wins starting from the victory against CSK in their first match of the season. Out of these 8 wins, KXIP defeated RCB twice and the rest of the IPL teams once. The streak ended with a loss against KKR in the 34th match of the IPL 2014.
3. Chennai Super Kings – 7 Wins in a Row – IPL 2013
Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the second most successful franchise in the IPL, are third on the list with 7 consecutive wins in the IPL 2013. They are the only franchise apart from Mumbai Indians to win 2 consecutive IPLs – 2010 and 2011. CSK have a total of 3 IPL trophies and numerous appearances in the finals.
Their winning streak started in the league match against Delhi Daredevils (DD). They defeated KKR twice and won against DD, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Pune Warriors and KXIP once each. The streak ended with a defeat in the 49th league match of the IPL 2013 against Mumbai at iconic Wankhede Stadium.
4. Royal Challengers Bangalore – 7 Wins in a Row – IPL 2011
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are yet to win an IPL trophy despite reaching finals more than once. They managed to achieve a winning streak of 7 successive wins in the IPL 2011.
They managed a massive victory against KKR in the 24th match of the IPL 2011 by 9 wickets to kickstart their winning streak. For the remaining 6 victories, RCB defeated every other franchise except CSK. The wins against Kochi Tuskers (KT) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) were massive victories by 9 wickets. Finally, KXIP stopped RCB by defeating them by a huge margin of 111 runs in Dharamshala after scoring 232 runs batting first.
5. Mumbai Indians – 6 Wins in a Row – IPL 2008
Mumbai Indians (MI), the most successful IPL franchise, have won the tournament 5 times with consecutive IPL wins in the last 2 seasons, in the IPL 2019 and 2020. They also managed 6 consecutive wins in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League in 2008.
After losing the first 4 games of the season, Mumbai tasted their first-ever IPL victory in the 5th match of the season against KKR. It was a comprehensive win by 7 wickets that started their winning streak. They defeated DD, RR, CSK, KKR and Deccan Chargers (DC) in the next 5 games to complete a winning streak of 6 matches. In the 45th game of the season, MI lost to KXIP by just 1 run and thus their winning streak came to a halt.
6. Rajasthan Royals – 6 Wins in a Row – IPL 2008
Rajasthan Royals (RR) were the champions of the inaugural season of the IPL in 2008 under the leadership of Shane Warne. They haven’t achieved much since. It was in 2008 too that they managed a winning streak of 6 games.
In their 8th match of the season, RR defeated Deccan Chargers (DC) by 8 wickets to initiate the winning streak. RR then defeated DD, RCB, KKR, CSK and MI in the next five matches to complete the 6-match winning streak. KXIP defeated RR in the 56th match to break the streak. Interestingly, RR won 5 consecutive matches of their first 7 matches of the season. If not for the defeat against MI in their 7th game, RR would have won 12 games in a row. Thus, RR going on to win the trophy that season was not a surprise at all.
7. Kolkata Knight Riders – 6 Wins in a Row – IPL 2012
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won the IPL for the first time in 2012. In the same season, they managed a streak of 6 consecutive wins and eventually went on to clinch the trophy.
Of their first 5 games in 2012, KKR won just 2 games. In the 6th game, they defeated KXIP by 8 wickets which began the 6-match winning streak. In the next 5 matches, they defeated DC, RCB, CSK, PW and DD. A match against DC in between was abandoned.
8. Chennai Super Kings – 6 Wins in a Row – IPL 2014
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) appear for the second time on this list with 6 consecutive wins in the IPL 2014. They reached as far as the qualifier stage of the tournament in that season.
After losing their first match of the season against KXIP, Chennai started the winning streak in a match against Delhi Daredevils by folding them for meagre 84 runs. In the next 5 matches, CSK defeated RR, MI, SRH, KKR and DD to complete the 6-match winning streak. KXIP had to score 231 in the next game in Cuttack to stop CSK from winning the 7th consecutive match.
9. Mumbai Indians – 6 Wins in a Row – IPL 2017
Mumbai Indians (MI) managed two 6-match winning streaks in the history of the IPL. The second time they won 6 games in a row was during the IPL 2017. They also went on to win the trophy that season.
After losing yet another first game of the season, Mumbai Indians defeated KKR by 4 wickets successfully chasing 180 in the next game with 4 wickets and a ball to spare. In the next 5 games, they defeated SRH, RCB, Gujrat Lions (GL), KXIP and DD. In the game against Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS), they failed to reach the target by 3 runs and thus the streak was broken. Interestingly, they defeated RPS in the final to clinch the IPL 2017 title.
10. Chennai Super Kings – 6 Wins in a Row – IPL 2018/19
In the end, we have Chennai Super Kings (CSK) yet again with a winning streak of 6 games spanning IPL 2018 and 2019. They won their last 3 games of the IPL 2018, including the final, and then won the first 3 matches of the IPL 2019. In 2019, they were defeated by MI in the final. The IPL 2018 was their comeback season when they managed to clinch the title with 3 consecutive wins. In 2019, they started with 3 victories making it 6 in a row. However, in the 4th game, they were defeated by MI to break the streak.
As you can see, a winning streak is one of the features that distinguishes strong teams in the IPL. The multiple times CSK and MI have achieved consecutive wins are not a coincidence. It is their consistency that has led them to such success over the years in the IPL.
