Most T20 Matches Played by a Player
In this article, we are going to look at the top 10 players with the most T20I appearances. Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik leads the pack. Malik made his T20 debut in 2006 and is yet to retire from T20 internationals and could feature in the next ICC World T20.
1. Shoaib Malik
The record for most T20I matches played is currently held by Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik who has featured in 114 matches and scored 2321 runs at 31.36 with 8 fifties, including his highest score of 75. He has also taken 28 wickets at 23.53 with the best bowling figures of 2 wickets for 7 runs. Malik recorded his highest score of 75, including 8 fours and 2 sixes, in the third game of a series against England in the UAE on 30 November 2015. Incidentally, in reply to England’s 154/8, Pakistan made 154/7. England won the tied match in a one-over eliminator. Malik’s best bowling figures of 2 wickets for 7 runs came in a match against Bangladesh played in Dhaka on 29 November 2011. Batting first, Pakistan made 135/7 before restricting Bangladesh to a score of 85 for 9.
2. Rohit Sharma
India’s Rohit Sharma has played 108 matches and scored 2773 runs at 32.62 with 4 tons and 21 fifties, including the highest score of 118. He has also taken 1 wicket at 113.00 with his best bowling figures of 1 wicket for 22 runs. Sharma made his highest score of 118, with 12 fours and 10 sixes, in the second game of a series against Sri Lanka in Indore on 22 December 2017. Batting first, India made 260/5 thanks to Sharma’s knock. In reply, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 172.
3. Ross Taylor
New Zealand’s Ross Taylor has played 100 matches and scored 1909 runs at 26.51 with 7 fifties, including the highest score of 63. Taylor’s highest score of 63 came in 50 balls including 4 fours and 4 sixes in a match against the West Indies in Auckland on 26 December 2008. The match ended in a tie with teams making 155. The West Indies won the match in a one-over eliminator.
4. Shahid Afridi
Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi has played 99 matches and scored 1416 runs at 17.91 with 4 fifties, including his highest score of 54 not out. He has also taken 24 wickets at 24.44 with his best bowling figures of 4 wickets for 11 runs. Afridi’s highest innings of 54 not out came in a match against Sri Lanka at Lord’s in the ICC World T20 on 21 June 2009. Chasing a target of 139, Pakistan achieved it with 8 wickets in hand and 8 balls to spare. Afridi also took 1/20 and was named Man of the Match for his all-round performance. Afridi registered his best bowling performance of 4/11 against the Netherlands in the World T20 at Lord’s on 9 June 2009. Afridi’s bowling helped dismiss the Netherlands for 93 after Pakistan had scored 175/5.
5. MS Dhoni
India’s MS Dhoni has played 98 matches and scored 1617 runs at 37.60 with 2 fifties, including the highest score of 56. He has also taken 57 catches and effected 34 stumpings. Dhoni registered his highest score of 56 against England in Bengaluru on 1 February 2017. India batted first and posted a score of 202/6 before bowling out England for 127 in the 17th over. Dhoni also had a catch and a stumping in the game.
6. Kevin O’Brien
Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien has played 96 matches and scored 1672 runs at 21.16 with 4 fifties, including his highest score of 124. He has also taken 58 wickets at 19.55 with the best bowling figures of 4 wickets for 45 runs. O’Brien made his best score of 124 on 7 October 2019 against Hong Kong at Al Amerat in the sixth match of the Oman Pentangular T20I competition. Batting first, Ireland had made 208/5, thanks to O’Brien’s ton, before they restricted Hong Kong to a score of 142/9 in their allotted overs.
7. Mohammad Hafeez
Pakistan’s Mohd Hafeez has played 92 matches and scored 1992 runs at 25.21 with 11 fifties, including the highest score of 86. He has also taken 54 wickets at 22.70, with his best bowling figures of 4 wickets for 10 runs. Hafeez’s highest score of 86 came in the second match of a series against South Africa at Centurion on 3 March 2013. Batting first, Pakistan scored 195/7. In reply, South Africa got bowled out for 100 in the 13th over. Hafeez also took 3/25 in the game to be named Man of the Match for his all-round display.
8. Eoin Morgan
England’s Eoin Morgan has played 90 matches and scored 2152 runs at 30.74 with 13 fifties, including the highest score of 91. Morgan made his highest score of 91 on 8 November 2019 in Napier in the fourth match of a series against New Zealand. Batting first, England posted a score of 241/3 before bowling out the Kiwis for 165 in the 17th over.
9. Martin Guptill
New Zealand’s Martin Guptill has played 88 matches and scored 2536 runs at 32.51 with 2 tons, including the highest score of 105. Guptill’s innings of 105 came in the fourth game of a series against Australia in Auckland on 16 February 2018. His innings which contained 6 fours and 9 sixes helped New Zealand to a score of 243/6. Sadly for Guptill, his knock went in vain as Australia chased down the target with 5 wickets and 7 balls to spare.
Bangladesh’s Mahmudullah has played 87 matches and scored 1475 runs at 24.18 with 4 fifties, including the highest score of 64 not out. He has also taken 31 wickets at 27.87 with his best bowling figures of 3 wickets for 18 runs. He registered his highest score on 10 December 2012 in the only T20 played during the West Indies tour of Bangladesh that year. Batting first, the West Indies scored 197/4. Mahmudullah’s great innings went in vain as Bangladesh ended up losing by 18 runs.
