India’s Leading ODI Run Scorers
In this article, we look at the 10 top batsmen who have scored the most runs in ODI for India. Sachin Tendulkar leads the group with 18426 runs, not only the most ODI runs by a batsman for India, but also the most by any batsman in the world. Other names on the list include such still active players as Virat Kohli.
1. Sachin Tendulkar – 18426
Between 1989 and 2012, Tendulkar played 463 matches and scored 18426 runs, not only the most runs in ODI for India, but also a world record. He scored his runs at an average of 44.83 with 49 tons and 96 half-centuries, including his top score of 200 not out. Incidentally, Sachin has scored most of his runs against Sri Lanka: in 84 matches against them, Sachin scored 3113 runs at 43.84 with 8 tons and 17 half-centuries, including the top score of 138. His next best came against Australia: 3077 runs at 44.59 in 71 matches with 9 tons and 15 half-centuries.
2. Virat Kohli – 12040
Active since 2007, Kohli has scored 12040 runs in 251 matches at 59.31 to become one of India’s leading ODI run-scorers with 43 tons and 63 half-centuries, including the top score of 183. He has scored most of his runs against West Indies, 2235 runs at 72.09 in 39 matches with 9 tons and 11 fifties, including the top score of 157 not out. His next best performance has come against Sri Lanka, against whom he has made 2235 runs at 60.00 in 47 matches with 8 tons and 11 fifties.
3. Saurav Ganguly – 11363
Between 1992 and 2007, Ganguly played 311 matches and scored 11363 runs at 41.02 with 22 tons and 72 fifties, including his top score of 183. Ganguly reserved his best performance for Pakistan against whom he scored 1652 runs in 53 matches at 35.14 with 2 tons and 9 fifties, including the top score of 141. His next best came against Sri Lanka – 1534 runs in 44 matches at 40.36 with 4 tons and 9 fifties, including the top score of 183.
4. Rahul Dravid – 10889
Between 1996 and 2011, Dravid scored 10889 runs in 344 matches at 39.16 with 12 tons and 83 fifties, including his top score of 153. He reserved his best for Pakistan against whom he scored 1899 runs in 58 matches at 36.51 with 2 tons and 14 half-centuries, including the top score of 107. His next favourite rivals were Sri Lanka against whom he played 46 matches and scored 1662 runs at 48.88 with 3 tons and 11 fifties, including the top score of 145.
5. MS Dhoni – 10773
Between 2004 and 2009, Dhoni scored 10773 runs in 350 matches at 50.57 with 10 tons and 73 fifties, including his top score of 183 not out. His best performance of 2383 runs from 67 matches at 64.40 came against Sri Lanka with 2 tons and 19 fifties, including the top score of 183 not out. His next best was 1660 achieved in 55 matches at 44.86 against Australia with 2 tons and 11 half-centuries, including the top score of 139 not out.
6. Md Azharuddin – 9378
Between 1985 and 2000, Azhar scored 9378 runs in 334 matches at 36.92 with 7 tons and 58 fifties, including his top score of 153 not out. His best performance came against Sri Lanka: 1834 runs from 53 matches at 50.94 with three tons and 15 fifties, including the top score of 111 not out. Pakistan were his next favourite among rivals, against whom he made 1657 runs in 64 matches at 31.86 with 2 tons and 9 fifties, including the top score of 101.
7. Rohit Sharma – 9115
Active since 2007, Sharma has played 224 matches, in which he has scored 9115 runs at 49.27 with 29 tons and 43 fifties, including his top score of 264. He has performed best against Australia, with 2208 runs at 61.33 in 40 matches, making 8 tons and 8 fifties, including the top score of 209. His next best has come against Sri Lanka with 1665 runs in 46 matches at 46.25 with 6 tons and 5 fifties, including the top score of 264.
8. Yuvraj Singh – 8701
Between 2000 and 2017, Yuvraj made 8701 runs in 304 matches at 36.55 with 14 tons and 52 fifties, including the top score of 150. England brought out the best in Yuvi who played 37 matches against them to score 1523 runs at 50.76 with 4 tons and 7 fifties and the top score of 150. His next best of 1400 runs in 55 matches at 33.33 came against Sri Lanka. The runs included one ton and 9 fifties and the top score of 117.
9. Virender Sehwag – 8273
Between 1999 and 2013, Sehwag scored 8273 runs in 251 matches at 35.05 with 15 tons and 38 fifties, including his top score of 219. Sehwag enjoyed his best success against Sri Lanka, scoring 1699 runs in 55 matches at 34.67 with 2 tons and 5 fifties and the top score of 146. His next favourite rivals were New Zealand, against whom he played 23 matches to score 1157 runs at 52.59 with 6 tons and 3 fifties, including the top score of 130.
10. Shikhar Dhawan – 5808
Active since 2010, Dhawan has scored 5808 runs in 139 matches at 45.02 with 17 tons and 30 fifties, including his top score of 143. Dhawan has performed best against Australia: in 30 matches against them, he has scored 1265 runs at 45.17 with 4 tons and 7 fifties, including the top score of 143. Sri Lanka have proved to be his next best rivals: against them, he has scored 983 runs in 16 matches at 70.21 with 4 tons and 5 fifties, including the top score of 132 not out.
