Netherlands Tour of SA at Risk

Netherlands Tour of SA at Risk as Covid-Variant Prompts Border Closures

The Dutch tour of South Africa is at risk of being abandoned midway following the imposition of stricter travel restrictions after a new Coronavirus variant has reportedly emerged in South Africa.

UK Has Suspended Flights from South Africa

Flights to the UK from South Africa — as well as from many other neighbouring countries — have been suspended after the new strain, code-named B.1.1.529, emerged. The UK is also busy preparing isolation facilities for passengers returning home.

Many Dutch Players Are Contracted by English Counties

Many members of the Dutch side reside in the UK owing to contracts with English counties.

Non-residents have since been banned from entering the UK and residents returning after 28 November will have to fulfil a 10-day hotel quarantine that they will have to pay for themselves.

After the UK cancelled flights, many Netherlands players feared they would have to remain for an indefinite period in South Africa.

Team Management yet to Decide Whether to Continue the Tour

The first ODI cricket match of the three-match series began as scheduled on 26 November and was washed out with the visitors on 0/11 after two overs, in reply to the home team’s score of 277/8. The Dutch team management has yet to decide whether the visitors will play the remaining Super League matches as scheduled after the resumption of flights of 28 November.

Head-to-Head Dominated by South Africa

The Netherlands and South Africa have played 5 ODI matches against each other, of which the Proteas have won 4, with one match having ended without result.

ODI Record of the Netherlands
