After a players’ draft on 28 May, the final squads for the six participating franchises in the 2021 season of the Caribbean Premier League have been announced. In all, 101 players will feature in the T20 competition, with 17 members to each squad, except for Guyana Amazon Warriors whose squad will be limited to 16 players.
Md Amir Will Appear in CPL for the First Time
Md Amir of Pakistan and Smit Patel of India will be playing in the CPL for the first time. The league has signed several other big foreign star cricketers, including Chris Morris, Shakib al Hasan and Faf du Plessis. There is an especially strong contingent from Pakistan. In addition to Amir, Wahab Riaz, Md Hafeez, Shoaib Malik, Usman Qadir, Azam Khan and Haider Ali will also participate.
Major Reshuffle of Players Among Franchises
Several West Indian players have been reshuffled among the franchises. St Kitts and Nevis Patriots have signed Sherfane Rutherford, Dwayne Bravo and Chris Gayle, while Barbados have roped in Oshane Thomas and St Lucia Zooks have added Keemo Paul to their squad. Guyana Amazon Warriors have offered a contract to Shoaib Malik who led the franchise in 2018 and 2019. Barbados Tridents have taken Md Amir into their fold, while defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders have contracted Nepal leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane, who has represented three different franchises in the last three years. While Malik has never played a match for Amazon Warriors that he hasn’t captained, this year, he will play under Nicholas Pooran who has been offered the role. Warriors reached the semifinals in 2020 on the watch of Chris Green. Malik has been especially successful in the CPL, averaging 43.60 as a batsman and 15.66 as a bowler.
Amir Busy in T20 Leagues After Retiring from International Game
While Amir has never played in the CPL before, his presence in the competition this year should not cause surprise after his retirement from international cricket last season. Since quitting the international game, the Pakistani paceman has played in T20 cricket leagues in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and England; he has taken 161 of his 220 wickets in T20 cricket in domestic leagues across the globe. The first game of the CPL 2021 will be played on 28 August, with the title clash scheduled to take place on 19 September. Owing to the ongoing pandemic, St Kitts and Nevis will host all the matches. A players’ draft that took place on Friday (28 May) was televised worldwide.
CPL 2021 Will Allow 50 Percent Capacity Crowds
The CPL was the first major franchise T20 competition to witness the resumption of cricketing action since the pandemic began. The whole of the 2020 event was split between two host venues at Brian Lara Academy Stadium and Queen’s Park Oval. However, all matches took place behind closed doors inside a bubble. Cricket West Indies has also hosted recent international matches in Antigua behind closed doors. However, CWI will allow crowds of up to 50 percent capacity at Warner Park to watch the CPL 2021 games, provided spectators possess proof of vaccination.
