Jay Shah Confirms IPL Will Be Held in India with Two New Teams

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah Confirms IPL Will Be Held in India with Two New Teams

The 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League will, according to Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India Jay Shah, be played in India and with two additional teams in the mix.

Speaking to the audience and the media at an event in Chennai, Shah tapped on the locals’ love for their regional club. He said that the wait they had been on to watch the Chennai Super Kings back at the storied MA Chidambaram Stadium — also referred to as Chepauk — was almost over as the flagship T20 tournament would be returning to its home-and-away fixture style for the upcoming season.

“The 15th season of the IPL will take place in India, and it will be more exciting with new teams joining.”

– Jay Shah.

Due to COVID-19, the 2020 edition of the tournament was staged in the UAE in its entirety, while the second half of the 2021 iteration went back to the middle-eastern country after a horrific outbreak of the disease and a subsequent bio-bubble breach saw the part of the tournament held in India go into an indefinite hiatus.

It should be noted that even while the tournament was being held in India, only certain stadiums in certain cities were used, and all matches took place without an audience.

Jay Shah also expressed his excitement about the looming mega auction and resulting team lineups.

Speaking about CSK in particular, Shah said that a big chunk of the credit for the team’s consistent triumphs over the years should go to India Cements Managing Director N Srinivasan and CSK CEO Kasinath Viswanathan, who had maintained a powerful, cohesive team.

Shah then praised CSK captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, referring to him as the indispensable soul of the team and adding the fact that he believed the CSK’s success would make a lasting mark in the hallowed annals of the IPL history.

With teams from Ahmedabad and Lucknow joining the fray next year, things will certainly get more competitive – even if it’s by virtue of numbers alone. In light of this, MS Dhoni had mentioned in the past that he would go with what would benefit CSK, but he later stated that he wanted to play with the Chennai-based franchise for at least one more season to improve his legacy — including a final match in his beloved Chepauk.

On the other hand, Dhoni also said that regardless of his wishes, it would be essential for the team to retain a good core set of players around whom to build the team during the auction for the foreseeable future.
