Test cricket is often marked by great resilience and an ability to concentrate for long periods. In the history of Test cricket, there have been many phenomenal batsmen that have made Test batsmanship look easy and have gone on to amass a huge number of runs.

In this article, we’ve put together a list of some of the most proficient batsmen in the history of test cricket who have scored most fours in Test by a player and will also go over the list of players who are currently active and have scored the most fours in Test cricket.

1) Sachin Tendulkar (India) – 2058 Fours

Arguably one of the most phenomenal and consistent batsmen in the history of the game, Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for scoring the most fours in Test Cricket. During his career that spanned from 1989-2013, in the 200 Test matches that Tendulkar has played, he has gone on to score a total of 2058 fours.

2) Rahul Dravid (India) – 1654 Fours

Another Indian batting stalwart, Rahul Dravid has been one of the most consistent and technically proficient batsmen that the Indian team has produced. In the 164 matches that Dravid has played during the period from 1996-2012, he went on to score a total of 1654 fours.

3) Brian Lara (West Indies) – 1559 Fours

Holding the record for the highest individual score in a Test inning, former West Indies captain Brian Lara features third in the list of the most fours scored in Test cricket. In the 131 matches that he played, Lara went on to score a phenomenal total of 1559 fours.

4) Ricky Ponting (Australia) – 1509 Fours

Former Australian captain and one of the most dependable batsmen in Test cricket, Ricky Ponting scored a total of 1509 fours in the 168 Test matches that he’s played.

5) Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) – 1491 Fours

The elegant left-handed wicket-keeper batsman Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka scored a total of 1491 fours in the 134 Test matches that he featured in, which puts him fifth in the list of the players who have scored the most fours in Test cricket.

6) Jacques Kallis (South Africa) – 1488 Fours

One of the greatest all-rounders that South Africa has ever produced, veteran Jacques Kallis comes in sixth when it comes to the list of players who have the most fours in Test cricket. In the 166 matches that Kallis has played for his country, he’s gone on to score a total of 1488 fours.

7) Alastair Cook (England)- 1442 Fours

Alastair Cook of England was one of the finest openers that England ever produced. Such was his proficiency and consistency at the top of the order that he went on to score a total of 1442 fours in the 161 matches that he played for England.

8) Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka) – 1387 Fours

Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene features eight on the list of players who have scored the most fours in Test cricket. In the 149 matches that Mahela has played for Sri Lanka, the elegant right-handed batsman went on to score a total of 1387 fours.

9) Shiv Chanderpaul (West Indies) – 1285 Fours

With 1285 fours in the 164 Test matches that he featured in, Shivnarine Chanderpaul of the West Indies features ninth on this list.

10) Virender Sehwag (India) – 1233 Fours

In just 104 matches, legendary Indian opening batsman Virender Sehwag went on to score a total of 1233 fours in Test cricket. His aggressive mindset and his ability to attack from the word go meant that Sehwag scored a majority of his runs in boundaries as is highlighted by the stat.

Players with Most Fours in Test Match Cricket – Currently Active Players

1) Joe Root (England) – 1063 Fours

Current England captain Joe Root features right on top of the list of players who have scored the most runs in Test cricket and are currently active. With 1063 fours in the 114 matches that he’s played, Joe Root is set to break a lot of milestones and records in Test cricket.

2) Ross Taylor (New Zealand) – 932 Fours

After a stellar career that spanned across a total of 112 matches, recently retired Ross Taylor of New Zealand features second on this list. He scored a total of 932 fours during his entire Test career.

3) Virat Kohli (India) – 896 Fours

India’s captain and one of the most proficient run-makers in the modern era, Virat Kohli has scored a total of 896 four in the 99 matches that he’s played in. Given the form, he’s in and the number of Test matches that he’s likely to play, it’s only a matter of time before which he enters the list of the elite players who have scored 1000+ fours in Test cricket.

4) David Warner (Australia) – 893 Fours

Australian opener David Warner is known for his aggressive style of batting and this stat does justice to his reputation. In just 91 Test matches, Warner has gone on to score a total of 893 fours and features fourth on this list.

5) Steven Smith (Australia) – 859 Fours

Steven Smith of Australia has embraced Test format like no other player in the modern era. Such is his consistency and ability that in just 82 Test matches, Steven Smith has gone on to score a total of 859 fours, which is a staggering number.

6) Cheteshwara Pujara (India) – 806 Fours

India’s middle-order batsman Cheteshwara Pujara features sixth on this list. In the 95 matches that he’s played for team India, Pujara has scored a total of 806 fours.
