Rishabh Pant to Continue as Delhi Capitals Captain in IPL 2021 in UAE

Rishabh Pant to Continue as Delhi Capitals Captain in IPL 2021 in UAE

Delhi Capitals will continue to be led by Rishabh Pant in the second leg of the IPL 2021 that began in the UAE on 19 September. The India keeper-batsman will remain captain for the rest of the season, according to a media release by the franchise.

DC Statement to Media

“JSW-GMR co-owned Delhi Capitals today announced that Rishabh Pant will continue as captain for the remainder of the 2021 season of the Indian Premier League. Delhi Capitals is currently on top of the points table with 6 wins from 8 matches and will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad on the 22nd of September when the league resumes in the UAE.”

Pant Made Skipper after Injury to Iyer

Shreyas Iyer handed over the captaincy to Pant after the former had injured himself while playing for India in the first ODI of the home series versus England in March 2021. Iyer led DC to the final of the 2020 edition in the UAE, in which they were beaten by Mumbai Indians. DC took on Sunrisers Hyderabad in their first game of the second leg on 22 September.

DC top Points Table on Pant’s Watch

Pant had led DC to the top of the points table before the BCCI suspended the competition on 3 May in the wake of a surge of COVID-19 cases within the bio-bubble of the competition. With the second leg underway, Shreyas Iyer has returned to the Delhi Capitals squad after surgery. While Iyer is available for selection for the rest of the season, Pant continues to skipper the side following the team’s success on his watch in the first leg.

DC Co-owner Jindal Welcomes Iyer Back with a Tweet

“Super excited for the remainder of season – very happy to have @ShreyasIyer15 back in the squad and fully fit – have no doubt that Rishabh and him together will continue the fantastic work done in the first half of the season – let’s bring home the title @DelhiCapitals @IPL”

DC co-owner Parth Jindal wrote on Twitter.

Iyer, Pant Star in Second Leg Game versus SRH

In that game, SRH batted first. DC got off to a dream start when Nortje dismissed Warner on the third ball. Just as Sunrisers appeared to be making a comeback at 60 for 2 in the 10th over, they lost a flurry of wickets to be reduced to 74 for 5 in 13 overs. Some tight death-over bowling from DC seamers Nortje, Avesh Khan and Rabada helped restrict SRH to 134/9, in which Abdul Samad made a top score with 28. For DC, Rabada was the most successful bowler, returning figures of 3/37. The modest target was never going to worry the strong DC batting lineup and the table leaders cantered to victory with 8 wickets and more than 2 overs to spare. Iyer was the top scorer with 47 from 41, while skipper Pant made 35 from 21 balls.
