Analysis

On 26 June, England won the third T20 versus Sri Lanka to make it a 3-10 clean sweep in the 3-match series. In the match in Southampton, England batted first and got off to a brilliant start with a 105-run opening partnership before Jonny Bairstow got out in 11.4 overs. Thereafter, England lost regular wickets and ended up with a score of 180 for six in their allotted overs. Dawid Malan became the top scorer for England with 76 in 48 balls while Jonny Bairstow scored 51 from 43. Barring Liam Livingstone (14), no other batsman got to double figures. For Sri Lanka, Chameera was the most successful bowler taking four for 17. Binura Fernando and Isuru Udana took one wicket each.

In reply, Sri Lanka got off to a very bad start, losing three wickets for only 29 runs. Thereafter, Sri Lanka lost wickets regularly and from the relative comfort of 61 for four in the 12th over slipped to 64 for eight in the 15th. They were eventually all out for 91 in 18.5 overs, handing England an 89-run victory. For Sri Lanka, Binura Fernando (20) was the top scorer with his 20 while Oshada Fernando scored 19 and Niroshan Dickwella made 11. No other batsman got to double figures. David Willey was England’s best bowler on display with three for 27. Sam Curran took 2 for 14, while Chris Woakes, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone and Moeen Ali took one wicket each.

The result of the match and the T20I series will have a bearing on the ODI contests between the sides as many of the same players will feature in the ODIs too.
