India Set to Host 2031 ODI World Cup

India Set to Host 2031 ODI World Cup

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has handed the hosting rights for the first ODI World Cup of the 30s decade to the BCCI. On 16 November, the ICC released a fresh schedule for major multilateral competitions. According to the schedule, India will host the ODI World Cup in 2031 after co-hosting the T20I World Cup in 2026.

Beginning of a New Cycle

With the announcement by the ICC of the schedule for global competitions in the 2024-31 cycle, the T20 World Cup in 2024 will mark the beginning of the new cycle.

Three ICC World Cup Events for India in the Next Decade

Thus, India will get to host three ICC world cup events over the next 10 years. The ODI World Cup in 2023 had already been assigned earlier to India by the ICC. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will assist India by co-hosting the 2026 T20 World Cup and 2031 ODI World Cup events. In addition to the three world cup events, the Champions Trophy in 2029 will also be hosted by India, as announced by the ICC in its list of hosts for global cricket events in the 2024-2031 cycle.

Earlier, India had been named the host venue for the T20 World Cup in 2021. However, the event was transferred to the UAE in the wake of a surge in COVID-19 cases in India. It has been five years since India last hosted an ICC event, the T20 World Cup in 2016. That was the sixth edition of the competition in which West Indies emerged winners beating England in the final. Five years earlier, in 2011, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were co-hosts of the ODI World Cup.

Namibia, USA to Host ICC Global Events for the First Time

Namibia and the United States of America have been allowed by the ICC to co-host ICC global events for the first time. The USA and West Indies are set to co-host the T20 World Cup in 2024, while Namibia will co-host the ODI World Cup in 2027 alongside South Africa. The 2024 event will be the first-ever ICC event to feature 20 squads. The ODI World Cups in 2027 and 2031 will register an increase in the number of participating teams to 14 from the current number of 10.

Pakistan Back Among Hosts in International ICC Calendar

ICC cricket events are expected to return to Pakistan with the country set to host the Champions Trophy tournament in 2025. Between 2009 and 2019, there was no international cricket in the country that was banned after the touring Sri Lanka squad had been targeted in a terror attack. New Zealand and Australia will co-host the T20 World Cup in 2028, while England, Ireland and Scotland are set to co-host the T20 World Cup in 2030.

Schedule of ICC Global Events from 2023 to 2031
