Top Run-Scorers in Test Cricket 2018
In this article, we consider a list of top run-scorers in Test cricket in 2018. The list features a veritable who’s who of cricket. All 10 players continue to remain active in international cricket. They include such star players as Kohli, Mendis, Pujara, Root, Buttler, Karunaratne, Khawaja, Mominul Haque, Markram and Elgar.
Virat Kohli (1322 Runs)
India’s batting star Virat Kohli heads the list of players with most Test runs in 2018. During the year, Kohli played in 24 innings of 13 matches to aggregate 1322 runs at 55.08. He registered 5 tons and 5 fifties, including a top score of 153 versus South Africa in Centurion in January 2018. In that match, the hosts batted first and scored 335. Assisted by Kohli’s innings, India replied with 307. Unfortunately for India, who were set a target of 287 to win, they were bowled out for 151 in the second innings.
Kusal Mendis (1023 Runs)
Sri Lanka’s top order batter Kusal Mendis features next on the list of top Test run-scorers of 2018. Mendis made 1023 at 46.50 in 23 innings of 12 Tests, with 3 centuries and 4 half centuries. His highest score was a knock of 196 versus Bangladesh in Chattogram in February 2018. In that game, Bangladesh batted first and scored 513. On the back of Mendis’s knock, Sri Lanka replied with 713/9 declared. In their second innings, Bangladesh scored 307/5 before the match ended in a draw.
Joe Root (948 Runs)
England skipper Joe Root is not surprisingly among the players with most runs in Test cricket in 2018. In 24 innings in 13 matches, Root scored 948 runs at 41.21, with 2 tons and 6 fifties. Those innings included a top score of 125 that Root made against India at the Oval in September 2018. Root’s knock helped England to a 118-run win in the match.
Cheteshwar Pujara (837 Runs)
India’s top order batter Cheteshwar Pujara was 4th on the list of players with most Test runs in 2018. He scored 837 runs at 38.04, with 3 hundreds and 4 fifties, including a top score of 132 not out versus England in Southampton in August 2018. Despite Pujara’s knock, however, England won that match by 60 runs.
Jos Buttler (760 Runs)
Buttler who played 10 Tests in 2018 is next on the list of top run scorers in 2018. In 18 innings, the England top order batter made 760 runs at 44.70, with one ton and six fifties. His solitary ton (106) came against India in Nottingham in August 2018. However, despite Buttler’s innings, India won that match by 203 runs.
Dimuth Karunaratne (743 Runs)
Sri Lanka’s top order batter Dimuth Karunaratne featured on the list of the highest run-scorers of 2018. That year, Karunaratne played 9 Tests, in 17 innings of which he managed to score 743 runs at 46.43, with one century and 7 fifties. Karunaratne registered his only ton (158 not out) versus South Africa in Galle in July 2018. On the back of Dimuth’s innings, Sri Lanka won that match by 278 runs.
Usman Khawaja (732 Runs)
In the calendar year of 2018, Australia’s top order batsman played 10 Test matches. In 18 innings of those games, the batter made 732 runs at 40.66, with 2 hundreds and 4 fifties, including a top score of 171. He registered that knock versus England in Sydney in January 2018. On the back of Khawaja’s knock, Australia won the match by an innings and 123 runs.
Mominul Haque (673 Runs)
Bangladesh’s top order batter Mominul Haque earned his place on the list of top run getters in Tests in 2018. Haque played 15 innings of 8 matches in which he scored 673 runs at 44.86, with 4 centuries. Those tons included a top score of 176 that Haque scored against Sri Lanka in Chattogram in January 2018. That year, Markram had two tons and two fifties, with a top score of 152. He registered that knock against Australia in Johannesburg in March 2018. Thanks to Markram’s contribution, South Africa won that match by 492 runs.
Dean Elgar (661 Runs)
Current Test skipper of South Africa, Dean Elgar, was among the top Test run getters of 2018. In 20 innings of 10 matches that year, Elgar scored 661 runs at 36.72. His scores included one ton and five half centuries. Dean scored the solitary ton (141 not out) versus Australia in Cape Town in March 2018. Building on Elgar’s knock, South Africa won the match by 322 runs.
Some of these players could set new marks in 2022 surpassing their best performances in 2018. In a sign of things to come, Australia’s Usman Khawaja has already made twin hundreds in his comeback Test during the Ashes series down under.
