Shreyas Iyer Keen to Return to IPL Action

Fit Again Shreyas Iyer Will Return to IPL Action

Shreyas Iyer is keen to get back to IPL action with Delhi Capitals when the second leg of IPL 2021 begins on 19 September. On 14 August, Shreyas used his Instagram handle to inform DC fans about his impending return to IPL action. Injury had earlier kept Iyer out of the first leg of the IPL. In Iyer’s absence, DC was led by Rishabh Pant. A surge of covid-19 cases caused the league to be suspended.

Injury Sustained during England ODI

Iyer sustained a shoulder injury while fielding in the first ODI of a series on England’s tour of India in March 2021. Diving to the left to try to stop a shot by Jonny Bairstow, Iyer hurt his shoulder and was attended to on the field by the team physio after the middle-order batsman was seen clutching his shoulder in pain. The injury ruled Iyer out of further participation in the England series as well as in the IPL.

Cleared to Play After Rehabilitationp>After undergoing shoulder surgery in the UK in April, Iyer was advised to take three months’ rest before returning to competitive cricket. Accordingly, the BCCI kept Iyer out of the team that toured Sri Lanka last month. After recovering his fitness and being cleared to play cricket by the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Iyer has joined his teammates in the UAE to prepare for the second leg of the IPL. The NCA declared Iyer fit to play in the second leg of the IPL after an intense rehabilitation programme was completed by the 26-year-old cricketer. Iyer underwent the programme at the Mumbai Cricket Association ground located in the suburban Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai city.

Media Release by BCCIp>According to a media release by a senior BCCI official,

“Yes, NCA has issued a fit certificate to Shreyas. He stayed in Bengaluru at the NCA for a week and his final assessment happened a few days back. Based on all medical and physical parameters, he is now ready to play matches. This couldn’t have happened at a better time with India’s T20 World Cup campaign in two months’ time.”

DC Support Staff in Quarantine

DC support staff, Rajnikanth Sivagnanam (trainer) and Praveen Amre (assistant coach) have accompanied Iyer to Dubai and will have to serve a mandatory quarantine period of seven days before they are allowed to join the other members of the DC squad. DC are yet to decide on the captaincy issue and it is not clear whether Iyer will take over the leadership of the team from Pant. DC made it to the playoffs on Iyer’s watch in 2019 and 2020.

Iyer’s Past record in IPL

Iyer has scored 2200 runs at 31.42 in 79 IPL matches, with 16 half-centuries, including a highest score of 96. He has scored his runs at a strike rate of 126.07. He enjoyed his best IPL season in 2020 when he made 519 runs at an average of 34.60, including three half-centuries. That year, DC reached the final.
